Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/28
Comments (34)Thank you all-- I had a lovely couple of days relaxing and visiting with mom and sister. All the local family stopped over Wed evening ... there were lots of laughs and a table full of nibbles and treats. I did not have any of the desserts/sweets but I did nibble more than I should have and had a number of cocktails over the stay. I was good yesterday but am to go out to brunch and to taste cakes today. I am not all that invested in getting the perfect cake selection-- I know all will be good so I think I'll leave it to my niece to select the cake/flavor. I should be able to make good brunch choices based on the menu. I have been pretty busy and active but no conscious exercise. I am going to spend some more time cleaning the basement this weekend to get my exercise area ready to go. I don't spend much time there (clearly lol) so it never gets my focus when cleaning-- so the amount of dust and spider webs is embarrassing. It shouldn't take long to cleanup though and I will keep it up after this. I was up 2lb yesterday but I am certain it was a temp reaction to the foods and alcohol consumed. I will weigh in tomorrow and cross fingers that I am still down 1 lb from last week. The good news is the actual party next week shouldn't provide the same food challenges-- as there will be good options for me. Have a great long weekend!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 12/4
Comments (13)Funky Yes to adjusting the IF eating window. That is what I attempt to do. When I have an early breakfast I finish earlier in the day and when I have a late supper planned I start eating later in the day. Most of the time. :-). Love the fact that that t-shirt fit! It shows that you are doing something right like maybe muscles are taking over and trimming you up. Strength training is wonderful for that :-). Not that I do enough of it to get muscles. Great news Gscience!. Losing weight and finding a way to comfortably maintain it is tricky at best. I'm glad it's working for you. With science behind you how can you not lose weight. Happy for you that you are having success :-). I found this article which talks about different kinds of fiber. I really need to up my fiber as well. Apparently fiber isn't best taken in a vitamin form according to the article. There is one derived from konjac vegetables but they are saying that whole food is more helpful in this instance. Not sure but found it interesting. Plus it's good for gut health and reduction in certain diseases. Always of interest to me. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/fiber-can-help-you-lose-weight#food-sources I have been doing well but the 2 lb loss didn't stick around. . Boohoo Boohoo. It was the first loss I'd had since my initial weight loss. Oh well. I am still continuing to run and I'm adding a block every couple of weeks or when I feel ready to do more than three blocks or four blocks or whatever. The dog I run with loves it which is very helpful. I'm not a fast runner and Adora keeps pace beautifully. Adora and her person will be going away for 4 months or maybe forever if her person loves it. So I must learn to run by myself. I'm enjoying it so much that I know I will continue. Both of my dogs are too old and infirm to be my running companions. Time to think of getting a new younger dog.. DH will come around ;-). As far as eating goes yes I am eating probably too much and particularly cheese but I am very careful not to eat too heavily on days when I am not going to be working out. Saturday and Sunday are my light eating days. I walk a lot on weekends with my dogs as well as during the weekday at night but it's still not the same since I don't do any running or any exercises. Sometimes the best laid plans of wombats and women.. I give myself lots of grace as if I were my own best friend when it comes to this. I've had to be pretty much my own best friend about eating because I eat I would say peculiarly anyway. I mostly can't eat out at all etc... Which leads to the conversation about going out and about and eating there wherever that is. I usually have to bring my own food and have to sneak refuse most of the food on the table. I just quietly take whatever looks the least migraine or kidney or gut problems producing. Not always easy but if I bring a few dishes that's what I eat mostly from. Unluckily my DBIL has been diagnosed with celiac disease so we often have to refuse the same things and the family is making more and more food that I can eat. I still have to watch portions though. Plus certain things like stevia are mood altering for me. I shake my head at that one every time it happens. They make me feel hi..gh. for want of a better word. The carrot cake is often made with stevia. I have to watch my portions with that one too. Although I want to eat two slices.. I'm not an easy date. By the way no problems eating dates. Shrug. Darn I've got migraine with aura. Time to go take some medication. Have a good week everyone!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/23
Comments (21)Congratulations @Faron79 on the weight loss and A1C progress! Huge achievements! Really great to hear @legomom23 finding a system that works for you. I think that's definitely the key. I am working really hard to motivate myself out of a bit of a rut. I am slowly losing a few winter pounds, but am really really struggling to take any off. I've been working hard to do 2x 36hr fasts per week and it's helping budge the scale a little, but not much. Frustrating for sure. Otherwise I'm trying to focus on eating healthy foods and being more mindful of snacking. I've also been doing well sticking with my no alcohol during the week plan to keep my alcohol consumption really low. It's never been a big problem for me, but I feel it is healthier for me personally to not drink alcohol most of the week, and then only in moderation when I do. Today is another 36 hour fast. Wish me luck as I power through this. As far as exercise, I am struggling with a really sore shoulder/back/side/arm situation. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what's wrong, but basically any effort with my left arm, especially over my head, is quite painful. Sometimes it's been painful just doing nothing at all. I took an extra day off of swimming (between normal non-swimming days) to try to rest it and it's a little better. Massage this Friday evening should help too. Meanwhile I'm trying to keep running (weather is finally warming up) and swimming most of my other normal days. My sweet sassy dog has been a little aggravating to run with. I want to speed up our runs a bit, but she just doesn't. It's important to get her exercise too, so I won't leave her behind. I did have the vet check her last year when she was doing this to make certain nothing was wrong. One frustration I ran into last weekend: photos. I am terrible at posing and apparently I sometimes pick unflattering clothes. We had a big get together at our house and the group decided to do a group photo quickly with a phone. I was wearing a brand new shirt and feeling reasonable about myself after my weight loss over the last year. But when I see the photo, somehow I'm sticking my stomach out and my shirt is bunched up unflattering. Bottom line, I look like I have a gut. I don't think I do, but that's sure what it looks like. UGH. On a positive note, the ladies at our get together (that are mostly younger than me) commented on how good my skin is looking. I do hope that's a reflection of trying to eat healthy for many years (despite over consuming calories through certain periods) and I hope I can keep it up. I certainly can see some aging in my face and definitely in my body, but I hope my efforts to take care of myself, eat nutritious foods, get plenty of exercise, make a difference in the long run. On a final note, I am really bothered by the judgement I sometimes hear about peoples' weight and bodies. A woman I know is beautiful and has always been thin, sometimes extremely so. She has never once had to worry about her weight. She exercises to have a body builder type body and it shows. But she has never in the 25 years I've known her needed to do anything special to maintain or lose weight. She made a comment about a lady at her gym, who in her words, was heavy but was working out a lot. She commented that the lady must not be eating well, otherwise she would be thinner. It really got under my skin. Ever since adulthood, I have struggled with my weight. Even when I am exercising 6-7 days / week and eating healthy foods, I absolutely still struggle with my weight. This is the first time in a long time that I've felt like I am making progress and it has taken an unbelievable amount of self control and quite honestly, hunger, to get here. Every body is different. Different metabolism. Different capacity for building muscle. Different bone structure. The amount of effort one person might need to put in to maintain a healthy body weight is different than the amount of effort another person may need to put in. And I am so sick and tired of the judgement and the assumption that being fit and thin only requires exercise. I didn't know what to say to her so I said nothing, but I wish I'd had a thoughtful way to help her understand that not everyone has the same experience that she does with weight. Apologies for ranting, but I feel like I don't have anyone with whom to share that frustration....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 6/4/2023
Comments (15)Also got food poisoning in NOLA, so I totally understand. We were there for the college football national championship. My friend and I had the same lunch except she got chicken gumbo, and I got seafood, and a few hours later I was vomiting, and it was game day. I made it to the game and drank ginger ale. That would have been horrible to spend that much money and miss the game. Luckily, our seats at the dome were on an aisle and near a bathroom. But I was feeling better by game time than the afternoon and then luckily for the long bus ride home the next day I was OK. But yes, I have an aversion to gumbo now. Also still haven’t done my decorative flowers! This week is supposed to be good weather, so I should be able to go out and get them. I will do the front planter box, hanging baskets, and some general pots for the deck. I did a Pilates reformer small group class yesterday so it was good to be back for that. I need to re-up my private sessions. DH bought me a gift certificate for my birthday, but he bought the group classes vs. privates. With the new studio, she has changed the class offerings, and he doesn’t really know the difference between a class pass and private session. So, I have over 10 class sessions but now 0 private lessons, so I will need to buy another package. He is actually intrigued by the Reformer, so maybe he will use one LOL. But I have to start somehwere with him with basic strength training. He just had his physical and everything is great—cholesterol, A1c, PSA, etc. But yes, after having alcohol more days last week due to travel and my birthday, I am ready for another dry period. We have Peter Frampton tickets at the end of the month, so no need to have any alcohol until then. We picked the rest of our lettuce from the garden since it was getting near the end, so lots of salads this week. I ordered the Oikos protein yogurt with my online shopping order yesterday, so that will be a good afternoon snack. I tracked my food as best I could but it’s a huge educated guess when dining out. Zumba today! Have a good week, everyone!...See MoreFunkyart
