New hostas arrived from NH Hostas!
Comments (10)Thanks, Ken. The native soil in the "newly discovered area" is heavy clay, but I tilled bag after bag of peat moss into it almost a decade ago when I moved in. Moreover, I just dumped a bag of Miracle Grow or some such brand of general purpose garden soil, which is like black velvet, into the "newly discovered area" to bring the level of soil up to the rest of the garden. The drainage is excellent, as it rained all day Saturday with no puddling at all. I intend to put an inch of my "shredded forest product" red much (the Scott's Earthgro mulch) over the whole new area to further protect the babies. I also visited my local area nursery today. While there, I asked their on-staff sage what to do with the baby hostas. He tossed me three 4" plastic pots, on the house, and told me to repot the babies into these slightly larger pots and THEN put the pots into the ground. Charlie (the sage) and I often get into detailed conversations about various houseplants. Today was no exception, as I told him of my big box store super-find of a Sansevieria ehrenbergii samurai --- the store had no idea about rare it was to come across---along with a beautiful Crassula arborescens undulatifolia, both in a planter with some sort of echeveria which was on its way out. I pointed to the ailing ordinary echeveria and got all 3 plants for half price, tee hee....See MoreMeet the new wave of 2024: REALEAD’s Fine Olive Tree blends perfectly

Comments (29)I want to finally use the BBQ I had put together last year and invite some friends to a BBQ on the patio I haven't used yet. I want to move 2 overly aggressive columbines to their own containers so they don't overshade the hostas in the same container they're in. I want to plant a new Royal Tiara hosta, as mine didn't make it through the move to my house from my apartment balcony. I have already applied weed killer to many of the weeds invading the lawn and rose garden, and the kids next door promised to pull out weeds for me, as one of my prescriptions makes me dizzy to bend over and then straighten up. And, with any luck, the new front door and side door, which I had ordered almost 2 years ago, will finally be installed by a 4th contractor. The first guy hasn't returned calls for 3 weeks, supposedly waiting for his star carpenter to get back to him. The second guy now has 3 hernias and is supposedly retiring, The third guy is not qualified to do advanced framing carpentry. But this 4th guy looks very promising. Wish me luck getting the beautiful new door and storm door installed, after almost 2 years. It's currently leaning against the dining room wall, where it does me a whole lotta good....See MorePurchased anything new for the kitchen?..2024?
Comments (20)Not quite 2024, but at Christmas our DD and her husband and baby came over to stay in a vacation apartment for two weeks and asked if we had a blender or similar to lend them to make baby food. We have our main house 100km from the city and DH works north of the city so we also have a unit in the city so he can commute during the week. Because DH doesn't cook much, when I go to stay for any extended period I have to schlepp specialist equipment I want to use, including my very old (definitely 20 years or more) Braun Multiquick, which I love because it is versatile and I don't really need a big dedicated food processor. I had a small dilemma, because if I lent DD the stick blender I was also most likely going to need it myself. Light bulb moment- I bought a new Multiquick so that after DD used the stick blender I could bring the new one back to our place in the country and leave the old one in the city unit so I wouldn't have to migrate it back and forth :-)...See Moresandyslopes z6 n.
