Drywall Alternative for Garage
Comments (0)I have wet springs under my garage and the paint peels off the ceiling and walls every 3-4 years. I am looking for affordable alternatives to drywall and paint. All suggestions welcome....See MoreGarage gap between slab and drywall
Comments (6)Personally, I wouldn't bother. They'll just find other nooks and crannies. As far as spraying with pesticides repeatedly, which is what you would need to do, I avoid such practices as much as possible. I'm not an environmental nut, but the idea of regularly spraying what is essentially poison in my house to remedy a minor nuisance seems very short-sighted. It's the proverbial attempt to kill a mosquito by firing a cannon at it......See MoreHow to transition drywall to concrete wall in garage?
Comments (3)Well you have a few options, like trim, or furring everything out and putting drywall to the ground. You don't want to put drywall directly over the concrete. The concrete will always contain moisture from the ground a bit. To be in fire code, you have to cover the sill plate all the way to the concrete with drywall. The drywall actually serves as a burn-through barrier between your house and garage. So interestingly enough, I did this for someone recently, and I got 16 ft long aluminum floor transition strips meant to transition from a bare floor to 1/2" engineered plank flooring. I hung the aluminum strips' nailing face from the sill plate, then slotted the 1/2" drywall in from above as the picture shows. The aluminum won't rust against the cement and can also be caulked to seal everything up so insects and air don't pass under your sill plate or into the wall assembly. The strip also smooths out the transition so things don't catch on it....See MoreGarden Shed Within a Garage - No Drywall?
Comments (5)I understood completely the concept, and my original comments still apply. The builder was finishing just as the garage - with drywall - but OSB substitution is better as you can hang light stuff like brooms, whatever without worrying about hitting 16"o.c. stud spacing. Closing the walls also makes the room cleaner and drywall can get knicked easily by shovel points and such. If you only have a 16'double or 8'wide singles overhead door and shallow depth garage, then getting the wheelbarrow or push mower out may be tight around parked cars (certainly a riding mower won't squeeze by). So suggested exterior door to this room. Going one step further, if it is truly also for "garden" use, so you have fertilizer, bags of soil/peat, unwashed shovels, etc I'm sure at the very least the floor gets pretty dirty. What I also see then is an isolated room that is only accessed from the outside with double doors. It would have a concrete stem wall from the same house foundation, slab sloped to door, and FRP above there so you can hose down as necessary. Double exterior door with sweeps. Optional "exterior weathersealed door with threshold" on the garage party wall if want interior access from garage....See Moreworthy
