Giant wind chimes...
Comments (37)I got a set of "tenor" pentatonic chimes from a company called Music of the Spheres a few years back for about $350. Absolutely gorgeous sound. One problem I have is finding a good way to mount them in the yard. (So I have them mounted to a 4x4 that was conveniently already attached to a corner of the house -- though a little disturbing when these brusiers bang against the house in a heavy wind!) They need about 8' of vertical distance from hook to bottom of windcatcher on the clapper. I fear they are too heavy, and will generate too much force and torque in a heavy wind for the kinds of hooks I see in the stores, which are designed more for hanging baskets. The only overhanging tree limbs are too high (i.e., big chimes hanging on a 20' cord would make for a deadly pendulum in a 40 mph wind). A tallish arbor might work, though they would bang against the wood and potentially break the latticework, and might twist the arbor in ways it was not designed for. Given that there are several companies out there that make chimes this size and larger, I would expect to find stands made for this purpose, but so far my searches have turned up empty. Has anyone found a good mid-yard mounting solution for their big chimes? Maybe my worries about the "obvious" solutions one sees in garden stores are unwarranted...if anybody has tested them out, please do post! Comments (102)Hello all, It looks like everyone had a great valentine swap. Great boxes everyone. My surgery went well and I am recovering quickly. Still not allowed to do much. The doc said you can return to your normal routine but don't push, pull, or pick up any thing over 5 pounds so hey, whats left. Normal????? I am trying desperately to be good. I am doing mostly computer work at the nursery trying to get my website and ebay store ready for opening soon. I have a friend that is helping me with heavy labor and I am getting to boss him around so that is nice :O) LOL. I got in a huge order of plants today and had to get them all ready for the cold snap, so I have been busier than I wanted to but all is going well. The hardest part will be not over doing it before time. Thanks for all the inquiry's. One thing I wanted to mention was the fact that a couple days ago I came home and found a box in my front yard. It was from our sweetheart Jo. She said that I had the most votes from those that chose to vote for the best xmas box. I was floored when I opened it. It contained the most beautiful throw. It is made of fleece material and is reversible with red daylilies on one side and a beige/green fleece on the backside. It is sooooo cool as it is not sewn but cut on the edges and tied together every inch or so. Never seen one made like it and it is sooooo warm and cozy, and soooo pretty. My yorkie has been fighting me for it ever since it came! Also in the box was a beautiful hand made (of course from Jo) angel. It is sitting on my mantle right now. She also included a nice corn bag. Just pop in the microwave and place on a sore or tired muscle for instant relief. Very nice. It has been quite handy the last couple days for my abdomen. Thanks sooooo much Jo. My camera stuff is still at work so I haven't taken pics yet but I will and I will show everyone the wonderful suprise gifts that I recieved. Thanks so much Jo for your generosity and thoughtfullness and thank you all for the votes that I never expected. It was a beautiful surprise. I also gave my notice to my job. My last day will be the 28th officially even though I can't really return anyway for atleast 6 weeks. I have left my position to focus full time on getting the nursery open. My open date is still March 18th. Hope I can recover and get everything done in that amount of time. It will be close enough what ever I get done. My career has changed, I am now an unemployed/self employed nursery owner. I finally got my license and all the other paperwork done and I am on a new road. Anyway guess that catches me up. I am guessing that I will be out of the corner in april so I hope to get back in the loop then. Take care Tanarae...See MoreDo not buy cabinets from Lowe's!!!
Comments (45)Dflood, I can only say I share your misery tonight! As we speak, I'm dousing myself with wine and plan to drown my jitters in a warm tub! We've purchased $13,000 worth of cabinets from Lowe's, ordered on Oct. 23. We did the demo with most of the work done by a son-in-law (a builder). He also put in our new floor. Our cabinets came last week, and the install mgr. (a very jovial fellow who didn't notice a thing) and the installer came out to inspect. Two uppers and two lowers came in at 21" wide instead of 18". They flank a 36" "hutch" with glass uppers. The 36" is std. depth (24") and the sides are 21" depth. Only problem is, now they are also 21" wide! The KD ordered them this size, so rather than try to wait another 3-4 wks., we make it work along our back wall. Tighter than we wanted, but will be OK. Today was the first day of install. We're moving the fridge into the next-door pantry, and have purchased a 21" pantry tower that's 90" tall to replace it (goes where the fridge was.) They ordered 3/4" by 6" wood filler to frame the pantry, to make the fridge look built-in. Only problem is, the filler is 4" too short on the sides, and none was ordered to go along the top. In addition, no scribes came, and the installer is blaming the Kd and vice-versa. I'm in the middle, and madder than a wet hornet. The installer wanted to try to "rig" it with skin to make it work, but I said no way. We're spending all this money, we'll do it right, even if I have to wait a few more weeks to have it finished. Of course, we can't start on the crown mould until the scribes are here. But to start off my morning, I got a call at 8 AM from our appliance dealer to say that they couldn't deliver them today - they'd ordered the wrong range. If I still wanted that model, it would be an additional $400 and another 2 weeks! Now, we ordered and paid for these on Oct. 28, went in several times to make sure everything was "on", and called a week ago to set up delivery. At that time, I re-checked the order and even said, "This is the dual-fuel range, right?" Oh yes, everything was waiting in the warehouse. Well, after getting nowhere with them, I ran out to several places and finally found one who had my range (Fridgidaire SS dual-fuel Pro Series) in stock, so I cancelled my entire order with the first company and ordered everything all over again from this place. Getting everything but the fridge, as we bought that several years ago. They're being delivered tomorrow (supposedly). Templating for the granite is scheduled for Friday, so I'm holding the installer to the fire to at least get the bases correct. Of course, today after installation of most of the cabs, I noticed that my pull-out pots and pans cab is 1/2" overlay, and all of the others are full overlay. So tomorrow, I'll have to point this out (like I'm sure he didn't notice!) and they'll have to re-order new doors. To finish my day, I looked at the sink base and thought, geez, this is small. It's a 33". I had it measured for a 36", but the installer changed it when he came out, said a 36" on the angled wall wouldn't work. I didn't realize this even happened! Anyway, my Ticor undermount sink now looks way too huge to ever fit here. I measured both, and they're the exact SAME size (from rim to rim of the sink and inside-inside of the cab.). I pointed this out to the installer, and he said he'd cut out the support bars that run front to back. OK, but it's still exactly the same measurements inside-inside. I called the granite fabricator, and was told they'd have to cut out some of the top of each side. They felt fairly confident it would work. Needless to say, I'm sure I won't sleep again tonight, or tomorrow night, or the next...... I have to say I've been lurking on this wonderful site for weeks now, just gathering advice, but I REALLY needed to vent tonight to some sympathetic ears. I keep telling myself, this will be over soon and you won't remember it. Sort of like childbirth. Right!...See MoreA very noisy wind chime
Comments (62)But Manny, what if the sail is made of wood? I do find that the trick to increasing/decreasing the sound is in the sail size and material and the length it hangs. I miss that beautiful black chime that played snippets of Amazing Grace, but it needed a more spacious venue than I could provide....See Moreluvprimrose
