Help with Color of Paint and Windows on Exterior of Ranch Home
Comments (20)Agree on shutters, no shutters. If they can't be architecturally correct or at least appear to close and angle properly, no shutters. We do virtual exterior designs and recently did a more classic take on that same style house. We added trim boards and beefed up molding on windows. I know you are leaning modern farmhouse, but thought I would share for fun because house is SO SIMILAR. We also added some brick to bottom of columns and a great stained, wood door. This classic look will never go out of style :). We gave the client two color options....See MoreHelp with designing our Ranch house!
Comments (32)One suggestion is to put some more windows on the front of the house. For example in the living room and the dining area. The head of the bed in the master bedroom is up against the hall. If someone walks down the hallway, you'll know it. (That could be good or bad depending on the age of your kids LOL) Also, do you really want a door from the master out to the front porch? Maybe put the head of the bed on that wall with some high windows above. If there are gorgeous views all around, maybe lose some of the upper cabinets in the kitchen and add more windows in that room. I live where there is snow and we made our front entry 6' x 6." This gave us enough room to place a bench and some hooks on the wall so boots and coats have a place to go when guests come. It's smallish, but I think it's going to work well. That's a long hallway to the bedrooms. Instead of jigging and jogging at the master bath and closet, could you square that off with the exterior master bedroom wall. Then move the master bath and closet into that space and have a larger open space at the end of the hall for a desk or storage or just some "turning around room." A large open space would give you a feel of a "destination" at the end of the hall. Finding that perfect plan online is extremely frustrating. I'm sure you have looked at thousands of plans. I ended up designing my own house (but I do have a little experience) Just remember that you have to take into account the elevations along with the floor plan. Also, think how all the mechanicals will fit in the house and that you have room for HVAC chases. Also, try to think what the roof is going to look like. The simpler the better. I know it's a lot to think about and that doesn't even include door swings, window sizes, finishes, etc! Personally, I think you are on a good track with what you have. It definitely needs some tweeking though. Just keep at it and you will get there!...See More1970's California Ranch Exterior Design Help
Comments (9)Mick50 I like what you're suggesting with hat modern dark and natural wood look. Except that I have this fear of doing anything too on trend and then feeling like its out of date down the road. Though, guess how the kitchen is designed?! Hale Navy cabinets, hardwood floor and a butcher block island so we do have that look going on in the kitchen! I'm really struggling with finding what i like and just going for it with this desire to be timeless. Its paralyzing because i like what's on trend but then worry that it'll look dated(argh!) Having said all that, what you suggest is exactly what i asked for.... stylish and stunning. I think what i'm wanting is something more timeless. Think Father of the Bride House but updated and a tract housing ranch (where's the laughing crying emoji?!) so at this point i'm trying to figure out which colors (hide) the anderson white windows) and make it look as timeless and almost Hollywood Regency or stylish cottage as possible (is that a thing?)...See MoreExterior remodel HELP on 1980 Ranch style home in Oklahoma
Comments (10)Not black--that's too dark and too harsh. When I look at this house, the first thing I see is the garage doors and then the light colored siding between the windows. The front door is invisible. I would pick a medium dark color from the bricks (or possibly a warm charcoal gray if you want a more "modern" color), and paint the garage doors, siding, and trim with that. Then I would pick a light, bright color for the front door. Then I would invest in landscaping, which you desperately need....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
