Range hood dilemma

Can’t decide on range hood for my space.
Details-
36”gas range. It and all other appliances are stainless.
Space between windows approx 60”
No uppers. 8 foot ceiling 😪. Satin brass pulls and hardware. White and satin brass island lights. Countertop white quartz with taupe and grey veins. Backsplash is long subway tile in soft taupe.

Advice needed
1-Material of hood (stainless vs wood painted to match ? )
2-style of hood-modern? Transitional?
3- where do I stop backsplash?
4- should hood extend beyond range width?

I can answer #4:

6” wider then the stove is best. So if your range is 36’, then hood should be 42”.

If you don't have proof that you sent the specs to the GC, ask him to show you the specs that he did use or show you where he found the 21 1/2" maximum height recommendation. Don't let him tell you that he could use any height he wanted in the absence of instructions from you; he should have asked. Vent-A-Hood says the recommended mounting height for their under-cabinet hoods is 21" to 24". For their wall-mounted hoods they recommend a maximum of 30". They also say that exceeding the maximum recommended mounting height may compromise performance. A range hood is not a gas appliance vent but an exhaust for cooking vapors, so there is no code requirement to have one and the installation height is entirely optional. Some homeowners are tall and prefer a hood mounting height greater than 30 inches and are willing to give up some cooking vapor exhaust performance. (I think of this every time I hit my head on the sharp corner of my brother-in-law's hood.) Therefore the height of a range hood should not be determined by the maximum recommended height in the installation instructions but by the design documents. So, the GC should have asked you what height you preferred regardless of what manufacturer's installation instructions you gave him. If the GC designed the house and prepared the construction documents, perhaps he thinks he has your permission to make such decisions on his own.

What about a chimney style like Angie posted? Have the chimney go to the ceiling, but have it vent out the back over the window - like I'm assuming your "under the cabinet" hood is going to. It will look like it goes to the ceiling and vents out, but in reality it will vent out the back. I also think if you get more cfms in either situation, you will be better off. Try for 1000 or more cfms, 6" wider than the cooking surface, and at least 24" deep (27" would be better.). I think TrailRunner has a hood mounted higher than recommended, but, she has higher cfms than you're talking about...1400, I think. If a hood is mounted higher, you can sometimes make up for it by getting higher cfms and a wider/deeper hood. Good luck!

I don’t like wide cabinet-surround hoods because it makes your kitchen look like it has “The Great Wall of Cabinetry”. A stainless steel hood provides relief of the wall of cabinetry, as well as welcome gleam and reflection. Also, a wood surround is harder to clean than stainless steel. Also, typically cabinet makers make the hood surround too shallow so that the front burners aren’t covered. And finally, when you have a wood surround hood you must buy the liner and blower separately which sets up a whole bunch of questions as to the many choices in those. With a stainless steel hood it’s all-in-one, done. Make sure your duct to the outside is 8” or 10” diameter. Choose a canopy-shaped hood, not one of those flat ones. Make sure to get a hood that has baffle filters not mesh. The depth front-to-back must be minimum 22“, but 24” is better.

Wouldn't it be easier to re-frame to get at least an 8-inch duct into the direct path? My recommendation for actual flow rate for this size hood is 800 CFM, typically requiring a 1200 CFM rated blower to handle pressure losses including baffle losses (usually but maybe not in your case) dominating duct pressure losses, and that of adequate MUA. A large enough reservoir volume under the baffles may allow some averaging, but the best you can get away with is to achieve the actual CFM of the plume(s), and even then you may not be able to deal with transient plumes without a very large volume (tall hood). A single plume starting at one square foot area and rising a 4 ft/s is 240 CFM by itself at the pan, and depending on plume spreading vs. velocity, hood air entrainment, etc., may be higher at the baffles. A 600 CFM blower (with MUA) likely won't achieve more than 400 CFM. So adequacy of the 600 CFM blower is questionable. It is undesirable to make a U-turn and duct down and out. Grease issues may lead your code enforcement officer to poo-poo the idea. You need to plan the MUA as it factors into what the hood will achieve. Wouldn't it be easier to re-frame to get at least an 8-inch duct into the direct path? What is the joist spacing and depth?

What "style / look" are you hoping for will help determine which type of hood to get.

With the 8' ceilings & window placements,

I think getting a stainless steel vent under cabinet with matching same size cabinets on both sides would be a nice option.

I would go all the way to ceiling with cabinets, to help keep 8' ceilings looking taller. Keeping the colors of the hood matching the cabinets below will visually help blend into the surroundings to help keep the windows as the main focal point. A dark hood avoid, it will draw to much attention to it & accent the shorter 8' ceiling.

It looks as though the goal is to get the hood completely center between the windows. That is great idea & is important it is exact. So,

Not sure if it's the photo angle, but double check the center is between windows accurately. Check cabinets to window trim match (in red A & B on sketch)

If you can post the 3 measures in the sketch that may help others come up with some nice ideas as well.

8' ceilings are a challenge.

Just to show you what an open stainless steel hood would look like.

It's shorter & becomes the main focal point.

It's not my fav. but for some people it works.

Here's some ideas to help you get ideas.

These 2 options where a hood insert goes inside.

This is a slim line vent that goes under cabinet, usually the cabinet above has HVAC venting, outside. The hardware on the cabinet, above the vent is optional.

With an 8' ceiling, the hoods will be shorter than a lot of photos seen on internet with higher ceilings. Also watch out for head room height, measure the tallest person in home & check both installation manuals for the range & vent for proper placement & venting.

There are no uppers at all on that side intentionally so the under cabinet hood not an option. I do like the squared off version in the pic above.
