This appeared in my garden...

...but I feel I may have put it there. Any idea what it is? Very fibrous roots. I know I have Zig Zag goldenrod in that garden, could this be it?

It's possible that its Solidago flexicaulis, but the leaves in the 2nd picture have wider winged petioles than typical S. flexicaulis. Other plants that would produce this amount of root growth would be Verbesina and Leucanthemum.

Those early leaves should not be considered, the compound leaves are the true ones. Looks like a Cassia (Senna).

Don't add lime or any nutrients like iron to your soil without a soil test. At this point you are guessing as to why the plants are yellowing. Watering every day on any soil other than sand is a problem. How long are you watering and with what? If you are watering for a short duration you may be underwatering because the water isn't getting into the root zone and if you are watering a longer period of time you are certainly overwatering. Either way daily watering is rarely necessary. Also, what does 'plenty of compost' mean? Roughly how many inches of compost were added to the growing area? If you used a halfway decent compost you aren't likely having an iron deficiency. If you also added a synthetic fertilizer, what was it? Just NPK or did it have iron as well? Iron deficiencies usually show up in soils where the pH is higher than the plant likes, not lower. Anyway, provide some more info please and we can try to assist, but please don't go adding this and that chasing symptoms or you risk making things worse. Definitely get a soil sample to a lab for basic testing (macro nutrients and pH). You can also get iron and other nutrients tested if you want to.

Birds, chipmunks, squirrels, voles, mice, rats, all of them will stash seeds for future use, and then forget to retrieve a lot of them. Birds are messy, too, and tend to get seeds stuck to them at feeders and later preen them out of their feathers. A lot of people put melon seeds with the attached "goo" out of the bird feeder, I do it all the time, and the cardinals, chickadees, and many other birds love them. Or, as you say, it could be a cross from the melon seeds in your compost. Hard to say where it came from As far as what kind of melon, well, that's hard to say, too, and if it came from a grocery store melon seed, it is probably not the same as the hybrid parent anyway. When it's ripe, eat it, and hopefully it will be a good-tasting melon. And, don't forget to give the seeds back to the birds, maybe someone else will get lucky and grow an unplanned melon in 2011!

Ive researched it more, and those winged petioles are normal for the first few emerging basal leaves. Yes it's most definitely Solidago flexicaulis, Zig Zag Goldenrod. I had no idea the roots were so agressive. Maybe they are agressive to find sunlit areas to colonise under the tree canopy? I hope the small Zig Zag Goldenrod, that I planted last fall, is as healthy as yours

Thanks! I originally got the Zig Zag goldenrod because I understood it to be less aggressive; but then I remember last year one of my friends who is a gardener at a local butterfly garden suggested that I get another variety, as he thought Zig Zag was pretty spready as well.

Zig Zag is supposed to be non-agressive. At least nowhere near as agressive as Canada Goldenrod. The new shoots emerge far enough away from the mother plant that they look elegant and not like a huge crowded wall like Canada Goldenrod does. I grow the Blue Stem Goldenrod, Solidago caesia and it's beautiful and non-agressive. Another nice non-agressive goldenrod for part shade is Elm Leaved Goldenrod, Solidago ulmifolia.
