Calliope- seen any lions or tigers or bears?
Comments (7)My community is on emotional overload right now and I'm not in much of a mood to start listening to political soapboxing from either side of the fence. This was a tragedy on so many levels, but unlike the rest of you I know the parties involved and some of what was left unsaid in the media. These animals were no danger to anyone until they were let lose. Yes they were fed the morning it happened. The man who owned them was found dead amongst them unmolested. Did you hear that many of those animals were there because they were rescued from other places and given sanctuary? Probably not. My FB page and emails, and the opinion threads of the local paper were full of some very thoughtless comments ranging from left-wing rants to comments about how their kids were going to have to make up an unneccesary snow day because of the school closings. Lots of Jokes about Lions, and tigers and bears, oh my. Don't people have souls anymore? Let me be clear I don't like the market in exotics because I wonder how they came to market to be auctioned off in the first place. I also don't like the puppy mills. When I first moved back to this area another exotic escaped and was shot by the authorities. It was kept on a local community campus as a mascot, for cripes sake and was dispatched when it escaped. I never really got over grieving for that needless loss but this one is so much worse. I also believe in freedom of the press, but the endless pictures of the corpses laying in bloody piles was disgusting and past the point of civil. Hope they got their ratings out of that one. A monkey and a wolf were the last two remaining loose and a comment was made that wild monkeys can carry a disease humans can catch and people were advised not to approach it. Well, when the media got down with that one it was broadcast that a diseased killer monkey was out there running amok. You know I really don't feel comfortable saying more because one is never really as anonymous as they think on a public forum. But as far as I know, it's still speculation as to how the course of events took place and things are not always as simple as they seem....See MoreLions and Tigers and Bears oh No !!!! IKE
Comments (41)Happy to see people checking in and okay. Hurricanes are so scary, especially with all of the flooding in your area. I was at a public golf course today, here in Louisville, to videotape a PGA golf clinic. Ike's winds came rushing through, and we stood there watching 100' trees falling over all around us. Needless to say, the clinic was canceled. Fortunately, everyone got out of there unscathed. I can only imagine what it was like in Houston. After hurricanes Francis and Jeane, all of my landscaping was wiped out, along with my fence. The windstorm insurance did not cover any of it. They only covered the "footprint" of the house... Not even the exterior paint! A special rider was required to cover anything else. Hopefully, that will not be the case for the good people of Texas. The most important thing, though, is personal safety. Gardens will recover... especially for people like us, who are sure to make it so! Bob...See MoreLions, Tigers, Red Spider Mites, oh my!
Comments (2)Gary I know what you mean. I had russet mites last year, they suck the life out of your plants. It was late last season that I finally ID them as russet mites. These guys thrive in hot and dry conditions. Last year in Santa Clara Ca. we had just that type of summer. Along with that I'm stingy with my watering, so its a recipe for disaster if I'm not prepared. I got this stuff from peaceful valley thats called cropguard, its a botanical insect repellent. I will surely be applying this stuff foilar every two weeks. Damon...See MoreLions & Tigers & Bears...Baseboards, Door Trim & tile...Oh My!
Comments (4)No, installations don't always match exactly in the way the detailing of the boards is cut, although they should be of the same general style (traditional, contemporary, etc.). There are actually different pieces for different purposes -- baseboard trim, chair rail trim, crown moulding trim, door and window trim. There are a variety of styles to choose from. HD or Lowes probably stocks the most popular types without special order. You'll probably find them in sets as far as styling goes. Pictures, pictures, pictures will show you how things are put together and just how much it all varies. Look to see what type of detailing you like and how wide of a trim appeals to you. Of course, if you like really wide trim, it may not look right in your particular space! So you have to take all things into consideration. The contemporary trims are usually very simple, flat pieces. At 1-1/2 inches it sounds like you might want to go wider....See Moreroxanna
