Nearly perfect Francis Meilland
Comments (10)Thanks! It's slowly becoming more prolific, I think it's already had over one dozen blooms, although only one or two open at the same time, it is so fragrant too, which makes it even better!...See MoreYour opinion is needed - Francis Meilland rose
Comments (3)I potted mine up in a 16" plastic pot when I got him several yrs ago. Did absolutely nothing for the first 2yrs. Third yr he finally bloomed. Then I put him in the ground and WHAM! He took off like a proverbial weed! He peaks out over 6ft and gives me maybe 3 good bloomings per season now. I have always been sorely lacking in my fertilizing routines, so he hasn't had much really ever. I would guess if you do a regular feeding he'd bloom a lot more. But he's definitely a big guy once he gets established and happy! He tends to be a little on the "warm" pink side for me. Depends on the temps tho....See MoreMy Francis Meilland has blind shoots
Comments (3)Oldrosarian, do blind shoots always remain blind? In your post you say " The other reason is that in a warm climate, when the weather is extra warm in the spring, the soil is rich and the rain helps things along, roses may make too many canes for them to support a flower. So they just don't make a bud. All you have to do is cut the cane back a few inches to the base of a leaf. Then the rose will make a bud." Now,in my garden, in my climate, in the very, very rare years when we are blessed with a rainy spring or better yet, summer, some of my roses just grow fantastically well and get huge, which I actually want them to do (I have a very large garden). But of course I want them to be able to flower well the following year. So, when it's time to prune, could I get away with just cutting back the youngest canes a bit? Or would you recommend a harder pruning?...See MoreHybrid Tea Rose - Francis Meilland
Comments (31)@Hoang Ton - Zone 9a Love your Francis Meilland 6 ft rose! And bouquet! It is fun to see how tall it can become; pruning would maybe keep it shorter. What is your location? Your gsrdens are beautiful! @rosecanadian @Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Hi, Carol and Kristine, How are your Francis Meillands? 2nd & 3rd year it grows it’s best! Kristine, When did you plant FM? I think some roses that are very small only grow a little first year or if planted in summer sometimes don’t bloom first season. Does it like it’s soil & location? My FM , planted in hot afternoon sunny spot, had done well first year, planted in April and it grew about 4 ft w/ several blooms-it was 1 1/2 ft tall own-root starter. Give yours a couple years & it should be heavenly! If it wasn’t for the door, causing my FM’s demise, it was good! Lol! The door hit Clotilde Soupert, too . And winter caused Yves Piaget’s demise. Quite a funneral for those 3!!!!! Lol! Anyway, I ordered a new Francis Meilland & Yves Piaget coming in spring, and a new Clotilde Soupert which I just planted. These are wonderful roses, given TLC, they grow heavenly!!!!! ENJOY!...See MoreHoang Ton - Zone 9a
