Azaleas from Seed -- On Live Moss?
Comments (8)I did read through the post suggesting live moss, while I haven't seen that myself, the poster was fairly specific about type, calling it hair cap. Googling hair cap moss will show you photos of that moss, but as with most common names I don't know how sure you might be of looking at the same type he used. My first thought as to sowing on many common mosses - they can choke out and overwhelm less than optimum lawn grass. Conventional method for sowing indoors without a greenhouse: Screened milled sphagnum moss has natural anti fungal properties beneficial to preventing damp off. Soaked, then squeezed as dry as possible and packed into a container, it stays the correct moisture level - a clear plastic lidded box like shoe box can be used (or anything that allows 1 1/2" headspace for seedlings), drainage holes aren't necessary. Mist the seed to settle it into good contact with the moss, cover and put it into indirect light at approx 70F. Germination should begin in 1 - 4 weeks. When it appears no more seedlings will germinate, move the box into more light but not direct sun, and a cooler area. (i.e. north window in room that stays mid 60s) The seedlings can stay in the closed box for an amazing length of time - you will want to transplant them when they have two sets of leaves. A few weeks before transplanting, begin ventilating with toothpick or match stick, gradually increasing the opening over about a three week period. Mist if needed during this time to keep the seedlings from drying out....See MoreMasonry or Finnish Fireplace
Comments (33)Just to give an update on my masonry heater's performances after 4 months of intensive use. We have used so far 7 steres of soft wood ( i think it must be equal to 4 cords?). For the first month or so we lit 2 fires/day. Since, we are down to one fire/day which allows the central heating system to kicks in for about 1/2h in the morning and the same in the evening. That takes care of the rooms which are not directly heated by the masonry heater. The bedrooms which are above the living room are heated by the masonry heater without problems. Our natural gas consumption is down by as much as 75%. As to our confort, well it is sensational. We have discovered radiant warmth and chances are we will never go back to anything else. Of course it does come with chores ( carrying the wood, preparing the fire..) but it is such a small price to pay for so many benefits including the immense satisfaction you get when you know you have done something for our planet....See MoreMoss Rock Waterfalls in TX--How To Clean??????
Comments (14)alaskadiver: Well I printed the info on the link and showed it to the gardener. He said he is pretty sure that is the snake they found behind the waterfalls! He aksed if he could keep the information to show his crew that it was not posionous...but since it said it could climb some 40 feet up high in the trees---now he's going to have to worry about his guys staring up in the trees while they are working on the various yards! :) You mentionted "if our pool borders a river..." well,... Armand Bayou & Nature Preserve (http://www.abnc.org/, borders our neighborhood!! It is a very large Wildlife refuge and wilderness preserve (2,500 acres by us and NASA). So I guess along with the deer that come to our window, we will have to put up with a snake sometime. We have lived in this house for almost 20 years and have only seen the occasional water snake. Thank you so much alaskadiver, for sending the information regarding the snake!! barco & tresw: Thanks for the 'good' info on the pressure washer. Starting with a wide spray pattern would be the way to go...now to find someone to do it! I'm still a little 'apprehenisive' of spending any serious amount of time around the waterfalls!!! So today was the last day of school for the boys & I have a housefull of swimmers celebrating. Hands off the rocks for now. Thanks again for all the input!!!! Now some time for summer fun...oh to be a kid again!!! :)...See MoreClean moss from glazed tile roof
Comments (1)There are chemicals you can buy to put into a hose end sprayer that will kill the moss. Glazing on tile is achieved by baking it on at a very high temperature. This is pretty durable stuff. Do you have a picture of this roof? I've never seen a glazed tile roof. Ron...See Moremillworkman
