Can You Help Me With Hearing Aids?
Comments (13)I have hearing aids now for quite a few years. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears. I should have been wearing them my whole life, but kids can be real cruel in the first grade! Back in 2006 I finally broke down, got tested and went over the different kinds of hearing aids that were available. BTE, CIC, etc. I chose CIC and have not regretted it at all. I have both low and high frequency loss of different decibles. The brand I have now are Audibel, these are digital. The right one is red and the left is blue. I had mine fitted just for me with a substance that was poured into my ear to make a mold. I hardly know they are there. To avoid that stuffed up feeling, the tiny air vents needs to be cleaned at least once a week. I just went back to the specialist for a in depth hearing test. I have loss some more % of hearing in the past 6 years. I was given a phamplet of the brand Focus by Microtech. These are also digital. I can still hear the dog lapping out of the water bowl and the leaves crunch under my feet as I walk. I'm am still very happy with my Audibel brand and don't plan on getting any new ones just yet....See MoreHearing aid companies with great customer service?
Comments (5)I've worn hearing aids since I was 25 and it's very important to go to an audiologist. I first went to Tufts Medical in Boston and was diagnosed and treated and, since then, I go to an audiologist I trust and admire. I'm completely deaf now due to otostenosis but, due to technology, I have hearing aids that access the middle ear to allow me to hear. People look at my sideways when they see me talking on my phone with the hearing part placed above my ear, that's how I hear through a tiny chip that transports vibrations. I also have a unit that I have plugged in on the tv that sends the sound to that same chip and only I hear it. There are so many types of aids and the dr. will know which type is the best for you depending on your loss and your age. Many older people seem to have trouble adapting. I understand that. If you have a large hospital near you, start with an appt. with an ENT and continue from there. They have a broader base of clients and a better expertise. State clearly how much you want to spend as it can get quite pricey. Hope this helps....See MoreWhere do you buy your hearing aid batteries?
Comments (16)I buy mime at Sam's Club, Walmart, and Walgreens. Battery life depends on the efficiency of the hearing aids and the tele-coil. Turning on the tele-coil uses additional energy and shortens battery life. My first pair of hearing aids was Hi-Health gotten through my insurance (Its the only brand they support and they cover only half of the cost, plus there are no local repair stations. If a battery door needs replacing, one must ship the devices back to Minneapolis for repair or a change in programing.) In my opinion, there are better devices than this brand. Battery life was 70 hours maximum or 4 to 5 days per my use schedule. My hearing changed dramatically at the end of last year. This time, I bought a pair of hearing aids at Sam's Club - no insurance coverage and much greater cost to me. The new aids are have 32 channels with the speaker in the ear and are superior to the older pair. Both use the same cell: #312, and the life of cell in the new devices is 6 days plus. The new aids can hold 4 programs. We began with 2 program: the first for normal/average environment and the second for noisy environment. After one week, I returned to add a 3rd program that turns on the tele-coil in case I changed my phone to one having tele-coil capability. Also, some theaters broadcasts "on the loop" which will link with the tele-coil in the hearing aid to give you better reception. The sound content goes directly to the hearing aid and it adjusts the frequency volume for your ears. The quality is better. Turning on the tele-coil uses a bit more energy....See MorePlease Tell Me About Hearing Aids
Comments (31)If 'The Wisdom of Crowds' depends on the crowds, the crowd at the KT is the best! All of the three brands of behind-the-ear aids offered to me at Costco have 5-year warranties for parts and service, including re-programming. The cheapest is made in Vietnam; the other two, in Switzerland and Denmark. They are all sold in pairs. Costco's Kirkland Signature 9.0 aids ($1500) have non-rechargeable batteries, but batteries are cheap (48 for $9), and I'm still dexterous. The audiologist in the video I saw was dumbfounded that there's no charger and was sorry they'd eliminated the telecoil. (This has to be price constraints, but I'm not sure I'd miss either thing.) The other two brands sold by Costco ($2500 per pair) are rechargeable ($250 additional for the charger) and do have telecoils. One is made in Switzerland and one in Denmark. I so 'unconnected' (low-tech) that I don't know if I need telecoils. I don't listen to music or audiobooks (currently), and I can hear fine (currently) when using my cellphone. I need captions for TV though. Will I be a thousand dollars sorry not to have the telecoil?...See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
