Anyone feel the earthquake this morning? (Friday)
Comments (5)Hi CD3.......my cat and dog didn't seem to be bothered by it either! But strangely, my dog isn't affected by thunder either. That's very interesting about your birds. I wish I could have been really awake for it. I would have loved to notice if the turkey vultures roosting in in a nearby spruce tree flew off. I'm wondering if my stocktank ponds did any mini-sunamis? haha I guess they felt it in Iowa too, so I'm sure it could have made it to Ohio. Very exciting! (as long as there isn't any damage!)...See MoreAnyone else feel today's earthquake?
Comments (4)I thought my pizza dough was exploding at first (trying sonoply's recipe for the 1st time) went into the kitchen and my wall of cabinets and oven were swaying. Looked outside and the boats on lifts looked like toys swinging around. Not fun! Reporting 6.0 here. Hurricane should be in the Chesapeake by Sunday- big weather happenings here :-( Phones are out....See MoreEarthquake Retrofit Strengthening - Good Insurance?
Comments (10)Out here there are also ways to anchor down mid span areas of the joisting as well in crawl space areas that involves pumping in concrete and embedding anchors with strapping that bolts through the joisting. Here in the mojave desert of ca., it's fairly common practice on old homes before the onslaught of concrete slab foundations, which are pretty much the only foundation type you see here these days. Even with slabs though, back when I was framing many moons ago, wall to slab connects were "j" -bolts in the slab that the mudsill bolted down to. Unacceptable practice these days. You can still use "j's" but also have to have simpson strapping from footing up the wall 24" in strategic places depending on load, up lift requiremnets, seismic, etc. Spot on checking with references and it might be a good idea to check and see if that work was engineered and approved via inspections. If not, you might consider a consult with a structural engineer for a few hundred bucks. Might be dinero well spent!...See MoreAnyone in California with Granite-earthquake related
Comments (2)The definition of "earthquake safe" as it applies to buildings is that the people can get out. As Chispa said, if it's a strong enough quake to crack your granite, you probably have a lot more, and worse, damage than that. That said, if the force and harmonic is just right and hits a vein or fissure, even a small quake could cause some damage. Your fabricator should be able to mend it so long as the walls haven't shifted. Because it's not bolted to the walls, I think the granite is supposed to just ride it out, and move with the waves, in a normal, small quake. If it's big quake, big damage, that's potentially another story. Ask your fabricator. And get good insurance....See MoreKathsgrdn
