Comments (6)Hey Ann, We have U-Verse. This is quite long, tried to relay everything. We just past the 15 month mark. I'm not really all that fired up about it. When they finished laying the fiber optic cables they scoured the 'hoods looking for customers. Offering more (we have U200) at what amounted to a huge savings over what we had. DH bit. Our rates did go up some after 12 months, but in comparison shopping, we are about equal or a little better off in price for all 3 services (TV, PC, phone). We are seriously considering a switch and have no doubt they'll offer an enticement to stay, but I'm not sure we'd take it. I'm comparing U-Verse to cable, which is what we had for TV/Internet for years. Landline phone was a separate provider. Pros: Internet has never had an outage (went out a little too frequently with cable, especially storms). Phone service has never been down. TV has had no adverse outages. There have been two that lasted several hours. But that was AT&T upgrades or changes, done in the middle of the night with announcements (on screen) in advance. Has a lot of cool little perks. -Call history can be viewed on TV. -If TV is on and call comes in, TV screen displays caller ID info. -You can view photos on your TV (have never bothered loading that, tho. ) -Can record multiple programming at the same time. Record via primary DVR only. Any DVR box/tv can playback. (See also Cons for more on this.) -If watching something 'live' on primary DVR/TV, and you missed something or left the room, just rewind and watch again. If the same channel is left on without disruption, it stores about 2 hours prior program memory. (Switch channels and memory is lost.) Say you're snuggled in with a great movie and something pulls you away. No need to press Record (which is a handy single red button). Just leave it on that channel, come back to TV later, press rewind, pick up where you left off (and then fast forward through commercials. ;) -Can check/play phone messages from any computer, change Voicemail Greeting, control VM inboxes, etc. (See Cons also) -We have no premium movie channels. But have gotten 3 months of HBO free during winter. And a couple weeks of others free here and there. -I'm trying to think of more Pros. Will have to get back to you on that. Cons: -We've had two DVR boxes (the Primary one) go bad within first year. Programs hesitating, freezing, and finally locking up altogether. Called C.S. Instructed us to reset by holding power button on DVR for 7 seconds and waiting about 5 minutes for it to reboot. That fixed it. Till the next time. (Which at its worst could be a couple minutes later.) There were nights DH was watching big playoff games and rebooted that box over a dozen times in a couple hours. Each time I called, they ran through the 'have you reset' script, then had me troubleshoot on our end by unplugging gateway box and powering up, then going online to a site where our DVR history/errors are logged, and read info to them. Apparently that info showed them how many resets we were doing in a single evening so they sent a tech out. Quickly, about two days later. He replaced DVR box. That was month 3. Tech said hookup job by first guy was not so good. Not buying it. Most common complaint talking with other subscribers in our area is failure + replacement of multiple DVR boxes. Now at 11 month mark for the new (replacement) Primary DVR box, it needs to be replaced. Same symptoms again. -Secondary DVR box on living room TV stopped playing back anything recorded. That happened about 4th month. Recorded programs would hesitate then completely freeze up within first 3 minutes. Don't use that TV much, but it was becoming yet another irritation. On a hunch last weekend DH replaced splitter AT&T had installed where cables come into house. Voila, problem solved. -If you must use a Fax machine in your home it will not receive faxes with Uverse Voicemail feature. I searched, I called, no viable solution. There are complaints online. AT&T C.S. said it's something they don't offer at this time. I have a SOHO and need my fax. So I had to turn off voicemail altogether shortly after we signed up. :/ Had to revert back to answering machine in order to be able to receive faxes. -Internet connection: I'm getting sporadic but noticeable slow down in connection just in the past couple months. It's not my PC, I religiously keep it clean of anything (e.g. spyware) that would bog it down. During those slow spurts when I click on links I get "site not responding" errors. (I hesitate to place full blame for that on AT&T, too many variables. Network connection status reflects a healthy speed. Could be my browser having fits.) -We have multiple AT&T email accounts between us (work, personal, and 'junk' one for web use). I don't want to log into and out of each one so consolidate, use software like Outlook Express, and now Windows Live Mail Desktop. This happened in both software programs: for unknown reasons, not all our AT&T emails come in. But if I go to AT&T site, they are there. Of the six accounts, it seems my personal and business are the ones impacted. (Only occurs with AT&T emails pushed to OE or WLM, it does not happen with gmail or hotmail, I set up accounts and tested it.) Receipt of some emails are delayed, sometimes by as much as a day. There are other annoyances (minor) so I didn't go into them. I know how I feel - despite outages cable for TV/Internet was more reliable overall. Just asked DH if he had to do it over again, would he get Uverse. He said "no way, I want to ditch it". Maybe it's our hookup. He was just talking to a co-worker who lives in a different state, the guy is thrilled, said it works like a dream. But there's a difference in hookup. Coworker's Uverse hookup is all done with phone line wiring inside his house. Our wiring to PC & TVs is all co-axial cable. (Original lines to phones were left intact, as they were.) So maybe they've changed install methods. (I'd definitely ask about that.) That's about it, tried to relay it all, good and bad. Comments (54)Hi Dearests! :) This is SO EMBARRASSING that EVERY DARNED TIME I get time to get on here and read, there's no time or I'm about to fall asleep (as is the case now - and I have to get up early)! I'm SURE I look like an opportunist just totally taking advantage of your advise, expertise and patience but please believe me that I simply have less time than I'm used to. Thank you so much for continuing this dialogue. I've gone into the worst depression over this! I just want to turn this over to someone else to represent me who's capable/competent enough but there's no one (or I don't dare ask) and I can't afford a lawyer nor do I want to get that legal. My contractor came back into town last Wednesday, Jan. 19th, if he meant what he said about his schedule, and every day I hope I don't hear from him. I just can't deal with this and barely know how. I mean Rohl said I could have a new sink but if I order it, I'd have to have the old sink out first in order to know which sink will be close enough in measurement to fit into the spot. I don't want to go pick up a new sink and leave it sitting on the side lines for weeks or months and then find out too late in the game that it won't fit in the old spot! So that means I need to get the old sink out, which brings me back to square one. I need to find new contractors or carpenters to get quotes from and feel so low I can't imagine figuring out where to turn, who to ask...who to trust. And who will be willing, after that last guy said he basically won't touch it with a 10-foot pole. My contractor's going to probably show up any day now to "finish the work" and then I'm also told by friends that I should no way let him finish the work but should deduct that which needs to be deducted and then pay someone else with the money. But he could file a lien on my house or whatever the terminology is. On the other hand I may never see him again since I paid him a partial payment that he may figure is close enough... Just to be clear: 1. My contractor bought the sink, not me. I mean I paid him sometime after that but he bought it using his own card. Not the dishwasher or counter or tile honing, cutting and installing which I bought, but the sink, faucet, disposal, flange and tile itself, yes. Now it's always possible he paid in cash and kept the whole order in my name since I had the items on hold in my name in which case there's no evidence he paid for it but who knows... 2. I truly believe that the sweet, young-sounding Rohl guy that I spoke to didn't really care and just called it defective for a couple of the reasons listed above by you guys but I do think if he has any experience at all (and he may not), that he suspects it was over-tightened and doesn't care - he just wants me to be a satisfied customer. My instincts and my own experience tell me so. And I don't think less of him or the company for it. 3. I have no proof that my contractor tightened the flange. I think it's possible that he didn't. But I don't think it's probable that he didn't. The timing of the cracks and the fact that no one else touched the area below it besides him and the way the hairline cracks splay out around the drain all tell me there's a better chance he cracked it than that he didn't. But it doesn't matter much if it can't be proven or that no forensic scientist - haha - will be coming around to pay more than the sink's worth to determine that. As for the issue of lying, I think there's a lot of context here to be considered. I believe he cracked it, and that Rohl is giving me a new sink but knows that he cracked it. My contractor bought the sink and installed it and messed around with it cause he didn't want me to bother his precious plumber when the leak needed to be stopped (don't get me started on how he thinks so highly of this totally flaky and rude plumber) and then it cracked. I think that covering my ARSE after everything else that's gone down is let's just say a fairly reasonable choice at this point, even if some think of that as lying. I get it, but I think that when you believe what I believe about what's really happened, it's not quite the same thing. And even then, I'm still willing to compromise at least a little - just because I'm not a one-dimensional human being and I believe my contractor isn't either. In my favor, sure, I guess, though yes I'm still really super uncomfortable about this whole thing and am as curious as the rest of you to know how strong I'll be and how well or disastrously this whole thing will turn out before it's truly over!! Comments (20)Goldsmom is right. I just tried to call my mom tonight and the same thing happened to me. I purchased a new ATT card from Walmart (900-minutes) this past March 2007 and when I made the call to my mom who lives in the same state as I live, all of sudden the number of minutes instantly dropped from 900 to 112 minutes. As the ATT representative explained to me all calling card users are now required to pay the same intrastate calling fees as customers with domestic phone service who have been paying these fees as part of their monthly phone service. So in other words, for each minute I use on my card, ATT would charge 8 times this amount for intrastate access. This equates to 23-cents a minute to make an instate call here in South Dakota, or almost a buck for every 4 minutes that I talk to my mom using the ATT calling card. This is probably true with other calling cards out there. Does anyone know if there are calling cards available for low "intrastate" calling? I searched the internet and can find phone cards as low as 1-cent a minute for long-distance state to state, but can't find any card that has low rates for making state to state calls. Please help, else I will have to cave in and buy some monthly calling plan which always costs me more in the long run, because I make so few calls a month to begin with....See MoreHacking really does happen!
Comments (48)Remember the scam with "Microsoft" calling people telling you your computer is infected. They called me, more than once. I had fun with it. I knew MS wouldn't be calling me to let me know I had a virus but I played along. Of course it was an eastern Indian that I could barely understand so I kept asking him to repeat what he said. Then I would act surprised and horrified. I thanked him over and over for calling to save my computer! I'd pretend to go get my cc so I could pay for their services and make them hold for several minutes. I would act computer illiterate and have to be told over and over again what to do and type. I'd ask "where is the "any" key?" :) I'd pretend to get another call and ask him to hold. Finally after string them along for 20 mins or longer, I'd say something like, "Gotcha you low life scum!"...See Moresephia_wa
