Brogdon vs. Hass vs. Doni vs. Russell Avocado
Comments (10)Choquette is an avocado, that gets better with age. I have one, and at the beginning, they didn't taste good. As it got older, they taste very good. Brogdon is very good, but a hassle to peel. The skin is very thin, you can't let it drop either because it gets damaged. Once it starts turning color, you can take it from the tree. I have this one too. The Hass I never cared for, and I don't have it planted either. The Russell is great, and it's one that I regret not planting. I had a plant, and gave it to a friend. Doni are okay, but I think they pick them too early. Doni taste better when they get bigger. I have a total of 4 avocado trees, Brogdon, Catalina, Choquette, and Doni. Catalina is really really good, but it doesn't produce as much as you would want. Comments (27)Way to go TG89. They always say grow the vegetables that are hard to get fresh and good in the stores and that are more expensive. Potatoes you can usually find cheap while a good lettuce is not. Plus tomato being a fruit (of sorts) you can pick at ripeness and peak of perfection. Everglades tomato (variety) is very reliable and produces in the summer so they say. Onions are good and cheap in the stores but green onions are not and are delicious from the garden. But.......regular onions in the home garden produce a lot of edible greenery you can keep robbing and eating. (I don't have a veg garden going this year) I have had very delicious garden grown potatoes but on corn...had that as good from a store as from garden. Best tomatoes I had are from a garden....See MoreFantastic melon recipe from my grocery store...
Comments (10)Thanks, Kframe, this sounds terrific! Sharon, any chance this is the recipe you were looking at - its simple but quite good! Posted by littleonefb (My Page) on Wed, Jan 31, 07 at 23:33 I forgot to add this recipe my daughter wanted for her party. The girls wanted something "healthy and refreshing" to also go with all the "unhealthy type food." CUCUMBER AND WATERMELON SALAD FROM EVERY DAY FOOD INGREDIENTS 3 cups peeled and cubed european cucumber 3 cups cubed watermelon 3 tablespoons lime juice optional pepper and salt to taste combine the cucumber, watermelon and lime juice. If not serving right away add salt and pepper if desired just before serving. My changes. I leave out the salt and just add pepper. This tastes wonderful served over sherbet or vanilla ice cream as well. My daughter likes to make one as is without any salt and another bowl without salt but she adds a sprinkle of white wine to the salad just before serving....See MoreNewbie with a few questions...
Comments (4)Chestnut Hill Farm sells a few avocados that can reportedly take as low as 15 degrees. IIRC, I've also heard of a few individual stories where avocado trees have survived between 10 and 14 degrees. A 'Fantastic' avocado, reportedly the most cold hardy avocado, apparently survived a few degrees below 10 degrees, for example. I have two cultivars myself, a 'Joey' and 'Pancho' that have just gone through their first winter, just covering them with a tarp when it got below about 32 degrees. The nursery I got these from told me to just cover the grafts in sand during cold spells, because the rootstocks aren't hardy. Some people permanently bury the grafts on avocados for areas that get below 25 degrees. . Regarding the long-term sustainability of a cold-hardy avocado, I would say that it's a gamble, but the numbers could be in your favor if you choose the cultivar wisely and baby it for the first few years. When there is one of those freezes that hits 10-13 degrees or less every 20-30 years or so, your tree (along with any other borderline subtropical plants) would potentially be wiped out. If it provides you with 15 or 20 years of good fruit, then you can say the investment paid off. If you buy one now and we get one of those bad winters this year or the next, not so much. Check out your temperatures over a period of years, usually reported from local airports....See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
