Veggie Tales - February 2018
Comments (314)Tom - I like it! Is it electric or gas powered? I have been looking to buy gas because I don't have very good luck with battery longevity. I already have a trailer but it has been neglected and needs new tires. I've seen some carts that have a rear seat that can fold out into a small bed that I like. I could also buy a regular 'golf' cart and customize it with a bed myself. I have a John Deere lawn tractor that I could hitch a trailer to as well. Itsmce - I'm not a big fan of Gurneys but I really can't give you many reasons why. They use to be a quality outfit and I remember my dad ordering from them every year back in the 70 and 80s. Their catalog and online prices are ridiculous but then they always seem to offer a 50% discount if you order before (fill in the date). This year I got a catalog from them that offered 50% discount before Feb. 7 and then about Feb. 10 I got the same catalog again that offered a 50% discount before March 7. What the heck is that...just cut your prices in half and send out one catalog. They do have a exclusive sweet corn called 'Gotta Have It' that I'd like to try some day. I got the leaf mulch raked off my 3rd potato bed and my onion bed last evening. The soil in all of the beds is nice, dark, and fluffy after adding compost last fall and covering with shredded leaves. I don't think there is any reason to use the Mantis on them this spring. I will dig the potato trenches and sprinkle in some garden tone this weekend. I'll just rake in some fertilizer into the top few inches of the onion bed and call it good. I also need to prep the beds that will have leeks and bunching onions. These will all be planted along the edges of the beds that will have tomatoes and peppers planted down the middle come early May. I will just rake the leaf mulch away from the bed edges and dig 5" deep trenches for the leeks and 2-3" deep trenches for the bunching onions....See MoreVeggie Tales- January 2021
Comments (281)Hi all - I jumped into this thread early in the month and then got caught up in work. Today was a good day to thinking about gardening though, with 3-4" fresh snow on the ground and more coming down throughout the day. I sure am glad I ordered the bulk of my seeds over the Christmas break. I just checked the results of a germination test with some old seeds (2014/2015) and placed a small order with Seed Savers, which is now publishing a 30-day shipping delay. These are seeds I don't have to start until April, so that's fine. I have broccoli seeds from 2014 that are still germinating at a great rate, so that was nice to see. My next big adventure will be going out in the next week or so to purchase some compost. We only started our pile last summer, and it's frozen/covered in snow, so I need some for my seed starting mix. I'm doing a homemade mix and trying soil blocks this year (the Elliot Coleman method). My first seeds (onions/leeks) should be started around February 15, and compost is the only ingredient in the mix I'm still missing. Trying to figure out where to get it (might end up at Home Depot) since February isn't exactly prime compost time in Wisconsin. @Cindy - I'm going to try germinating some Hot Portugal seeds from 2012 this year, so I'll report back on that. :) In the past I think I've only had to use seed that was 2-3 years old....See MoreVeggie Tales - February 2021
Comments (551)Here is the list of tomato plants I transplanted into containers; (most only have one plant, but some of the containers had 2 or 3 plants growing together, so I just transplanted the whole thing and will remove the smaller plants as needed before they start putting on too many blooms. The few squash plants I have keep putting out blooms every day): Chocolate Stripes Dark Shekel George Detsika’s Italian Red Dark Star Pink Ping Pong (2) Hungarian Heart (2) Angora Super Sweet (2) Honeycomb Mortgage Lifter Giant Belgium (2) Black Cherry (2) Sweet Tangerine (2) Classic Beefsteak Black Beauty (2) Creole (22 containers used)-these were just the tallest tomato plants now. I have maybe 30 or so more 3 and 4 inch containers with tomato plants....See MoreWhat are you reading? February 2024 Edition
Comments (60)Just finished The Winter Soldier. I liked it very much, 4 stars. Thanks to those who mentioned it in the January thread. You guys have the best recommendations. I was hoping for a different ending, but it was a just ending. It's the first Daniel Mason book I've read and love his writing. Straightforward but evocative. I have North Woods on hold. Turns out Mason is my daughter's age and is from Palo Alto....See MoreHU-939938193
