Other Rose Companion Colors for Red Roses
Comments (6)Here's red with a little bit of everything around it: Here's red accompanied by white and a strong gold-yellow (I usually think the strong yellows work best with a bright red): Dusty Miller (annual) will beautifully downplay the bright red rose: Once more--just cuz its pretty: I really like whites next to my reds--provides a "cool" balance. Here is Gourmet Popcorn rose (planted next to the William Shakespeare 2000 you can't see in the pic): Here is white Hardy Garden Geranium growing at the feet of one of my red roses. I have the white Hardy Garden Geranium growing by a number of my red roses--gives a really airy, lacey effect to the garden--quite charming! Here's another Hardy White Garden Geranium floating around the feet of a red rose and a pink rose next to it. (I like this pic.) Here's pic my daughter took of climbing red Dublin Bay and a white climbing clematis mixed in with it. Light blue iris in the middle of my rose bed which has lots of red roses looks spectacular in the spring: As you can see, I like whites, silvers, and pale blues as cooling contrasts with my reds, and I like strong yellow-golds to compete with the hot reds. An occasional light pink rose in there gives some pleasing variety. Hope that gives you some ideas. Kate...See MoreRed and pink spring bouquets (with a little purple)
Comments (18)Lovely pics Cori Ann!..ohh I miss Tulips so much, but had to reluctantly give them up year before last, cause its just getting too warm for them here. Having to buy fresh bulbs every year, ( ok, not so much of a burden seeing I got to try out so many different varieties, but it did get expensive) 6 weeks of fridge space for chilling, then to see them blow in 3 days because of an early burst of summer was just too disappointing. I love the parrot tulips ( the "blue" and black ones were favourites)- and those pretty pinky webers were next on my list to try ! Holland Beauty (lovely mauvey shade) , Negrita (bright imperial purple with a silvery sheen) Double Angelique (pearly and pinky shades) and Isle de France (deep dark red, and the only tulip that ever came back next year for me) were some of the ones I enjoyed the most....See More"purple" roses that are too "red" ; remedies?
Comments (29)I wonder if there is more to it than just ph though? I've had mine change colors in the same day and last week's candy apple red Mr. Lincoln (which turned tomato red with sugar added) is this week's purplish Mr. L for no apparent reason. My Midnight Blues can look just like Ebb TIde or can go almost to a bluish black velvet tone, sometimes purplish black. But both MB and Mr. L can have a velvet quality so I wonder if that has something to do with it? Ebb Tide has started out the morning dark violet and ended up dark burgundy by afternoon. My first Madame IP's blooms were all a gorgeous shade of violet and now they are magenta which I dislike immensely. It is a bit warmer though but expecting a cold front with the thunderstorms tonight. I'm going to start paying closer attention to this!...See MoreRecommendations for red roses...
Comments (22)If you have several other very fragrant roses, are you sure it will matter if you sneak in one or two that aren't? I'm not a "fragrance fiend" (lol) myself,so I don't really know how those of you who care a lot about fragrance feel, but to me fragrance can be very elusive. Some years, for example, Paul's Himalayan Musk perfumes the entire area during it's all-too-brief blooming period, but last spring I didn't notice much of anything. Other roses seem to be fragrant only during certain times of the day,or lose their fragrance once cut, etc, etc, etc. Also. to me at least, there's the "too much of a good thing" factor. After wallowing in the inebriating perfume of ,say, Mme. Isaac Pereire and others like it, I truly treasure the light,citrus-y scent of Harlekin (HMF calls its' scent "strong wild rose",whatever that means. To me, it's very light, fresh, and lemony; I wouldn't use the word "strong".) There is such a thing as over-kill! And note that Nik specified "to my nose".Sensory perceptions can and do differ so much from person to person, so for all of these reasons personally I'd advise you to just be happy that you finally snagged an Ascot. After all,if in the long run you decide you don't like it, your plan DOES admit the possibility of making eliminations......See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
