Marvin Window Wood Choice With Red Oak Floors

Hi all... we have a mid century ranch home and are replacing our sashless Pierson windows. They are very unique, but unfortunately not suited to the Wisconsin climate.

After years of research and going back and forth, we have decided on Marvin Ultimate Narrow frame with black exterior and stained wood interior. Awning on small openings and double casement on larger ones.

Our sticking point is whether or not we go with wheat stained pine or wheat stained virtical grain doug fir. Which one would go best with oil based red oak floors?

We will eventually place doors, so we have flexibility there.

There is a pretty big upcharge for VGDF but if it's better for possible moisture 5/10/20 years down the road, I think we are ok with the cost.

Are you planning od going wood doors when you cahnge ? IMO if you sty with wood trim then whatever color works with the floors . I painted all my trim in my MCM ranch sine to me it is non descript and not worth highlighting and the same for the doors we changed them all to pixelated glass and a painted frame . .

Yes, we are going to stay with wood trim around the windows and doors and then do baseboards to match the walls. Most are Simply White from BM...with the exception of this room (a grey I can't remember off the top of my head)...

Here is the choice of window stain. Wheat pine is close but a little lighter... wheat VGDF is also close but a little darker

I'm assuming your red oak is natural color? Or is it stained? If natural I would personally say since it's a separate room and two steps down that you should go darker, you don't want to try and get the same color (trying to match the other room) as it might be a few shades off and then it will look like you were trying to match the red oak but did not quit succeed. I would go darker, something at least a 2-3 shades darker so you can see the contrast between the two..that would look very nice. I would personally go with a nice richer color like chestnut color or walnut it would look very nice. Lucy

Millworkman probably knows the wood window offerings as good, if not better, than anyone. Marvin is well regarded, usually for good reason, as one of the top wood windows made today. Harvey, as a company, is what I would consider better than average and better than mediocre to quote millworkman. With that said, I cannot comment personally on their wood window. Good window window evaluation criteria (just some) would be: -cladding type? If aluminum, roll formed or extruded? What gauge? -what type of base wood is used? -any finger joints in the sill or structural wood? -warranty?

If you were going to be truly historic, you shouldn't have air conditioning, but I am going to guess you are going to opt to put that in. Just trying to make the point that being that historic is great, but if you can save $13,000 and make the home considerably more efficient with only the slightest offset in visual (non-detectable to everyone but you or a window professional), why not go that route?

G & S Floor Service - Will Nutmeg come out orangey on Red Oak? My husband would like to go lighter and doesn't mind a golden or reddish tone as he likes the look of a cherry woodd color but I really want more of a brown. Would Medium Brown work well? I would go for Jacobean but my husband is averse to how dark it is. He would probably be happy with chestnut or provincial and a cinnamon colored floor. :-) I would truly appreciate hearing from you as I have to give my floor guy 4 choices of stains to try out today!

Stay away fro.from. Marvin Elevate and Marvin ingeneral product and warranty are C R A P they delete all negative comments posted onon YouTube so thats why everything you see is positive. They will do a patch job and pai.pai.t Exterior cracks disregard flaking and say you approved all exterior work. Then they will tell you to hire your own Pro Painter if they approve quote to have interior repainted. Then it will be your Painters fault warranty void.
