Idyll #410 Last of the berries, first white snows...
Comments (100)Happy Wednesday, everybody! Dreary and snowy here today, but not excruciatingly cold... House needs some tidying, but it's bill-paying day today (we just call it "money transfer day" - our penions get direct deposited, I pay the bills on-line. Pfft! Done in half an hour...). Thank you for your collective outrage directed toward the Phils...however, in their defence....we take turns here putting the little guy to bed (music practice, homework, bath, snack etc.) and cleaning up the kitchen. The other night it was my turn to do the clean-up. If I am sick or tired or going out, one of the adult Phils pitches in and takes my turn at whatever, and vice versa. But the other night I was not sick, or tired, or going anywhere, I was in a snit and just didn't take my turn. So....not excusable but maybe understandable...They did, however, pull out all of the Christmas decorations and help Adrian start his note to Santa and hang hs stocking (already! He can hardly wait!). I spent half an hour at the school yesterday looking for wayward mittens, snowpants (two pair gone already!) hats, fleeces etc. To no avail. His name is in everything....He came home with two pairs of the three snowpants that have gone to the school in the last week, and one pair of ski mitts without the liners...Saw the principal in the hall he asked if I had any insights on the lost stuff problem - I told him the real problem is that the kids are seven years old (grin). Busy week coming up. Today - music and parent-teacher interviews (report card was good). Tommorrow - DH has his physical in the town we moved from (can't find a doctor here) so I might tag along and shop..Friday Professional Development day for teachers so TCS has no school - he and his Daddy are making a gingerbread house, I am volunteering at the school book fair for three hours. Christmas stuff, volunteer stuff, trying to get an appointment to look at a very large old house for sale three blocks from here - likely a pipe-dream but... I will be taking out the dishes this week-end too - so a photo will be forthcoming... I hope you all have (or had?) a great Thanksgiving and are ready to leap right into the Christmas spirit! See you tomorrow... CHeers! Julie...See MoreExperienced Rose Growers Will You Advise On My New Selections
Comments (24)Hi Jennifer -- I'm living in California but grew up north of Pittsburgh (near Butler) so I'm familiar with your climate. You should do well with Austin roses with winter protection. As for climbers, I suggest you get more cold-hardy roses than Austins, which in any case may not be climbers for you. I agree with those who say you would do well to order hardy roses from Pickering. If you want own-root roses, you might consider High Country Roses as a source. Certain rose breeders specialize in cold resistant roses. Kordes, the Brownells, and Griffin Buck are among them, and there is a series of Canadian Explorer roses that are exceptionally cold-tolerant. For a red climber I'm going to suggest the Brownell rose Rhode Island Red. I have heard that this rose is probably the same rose popularly known both as Field of the Wood and as Kocher Red. It would give you that nice, full rose old fashioned rose form in a repeat blooming climber, and it is fragrant. Under one name or another, it is available from a number of old rose vendors....See MoreI Am Honored in Rose Notes Today
Comments (16)Congratulations Pam. I remember seeing the slide show of your garden on Carolyn's website, back in 2007 when it was first posted. It was a great pleasure to wander vicariously in your garden once again by viewing the photos again. I can only imagine what it would be like to be there at peak bloom in the flesh. Your garden is extraordinary and lovely. So your house isn't very clean? Who needs a spotless house when your world is a spectacular rose garden in the California hills. Congratulations also on having some of your roses made available to others through Vintage Gardens. Rosalia looks like a very beautiful rose. I am always jealous of all you American Rosarians who have that fabulous nursery to provide you with treasures I can only dream of. I've thought of ordering some Brownells and rare Austin's from Vintage on numerous occasions, but I have ordered from US nurseries in the past and shipping rose bands across the border has caused me much grief and many dead plants due to delays. Perhaps one day I will have to make the trip. Cheers, RRL...See MoreHonoring people I love in my garden
Comments (15)What a nice thread. I nearly died laughing at the eggplant story! I have a memorial garden for my black lab "Friend" who passed in February. I planted several yellow rose bushes in his honor since yellow roses are for Friendship. when they bloom I think of him and it gives me the push to take extra special care of them since they are for him. I also have a rose by the name of Colleen Mary- whichis my twin sister's name. She bought it and doenst have a good spot for it and decided I shuodl save it's life. I jsut got it a few weeksago and it's miserable- so I am hoping to help it. haha I got married in my yard and gardens too..When my sister threw me my bridal shower a month before the wedding, she asked peopel to do a "wishing garden" instead of a wishing well. I already ahd all the household stuff I needed. So she asked peopel to buy perennials to decorate my landscape and rmember them by for years to come. I have so many plants now that remind me of the person who gave them to me for my bridal shower. it always amazes me. A neighbor gave me a red fancy leafed japanese maple for my wedding gift too. You know the small ones that are way expensive..!? liek $200 for a tree not even 2 feet high. haha. The kind that will et wider but nly reach maybe 5 feet after decades.. you know the kind! I have a special place for that and we always comment how special it is and how we'll alwasy remember the wedding because we have the tree planted. it is doign very well and growing and just gorgeous. these special plants mean so much to me too!...See MoreMarkay MD-Zone 7A (8A on new map)
