Comments (47)Kim, you are ahead of me, but you may be q 100 miles south of me also, so spring may hit you a little sooner. 32 tubs are a lot of tubs to fill, and of course you know how heavy they can get. Some of my tubs have onions in them, and the last time I checked they were doing well, but they are not bulbing onions. I have been using my perennial a lot, try to get Madge use to using them. I even used some winter onions, jalapenos and sweet potatoes in kraut and weiners at lunch, it sounds sickening, but it was good. I did not put the sweet potato slices in till everything else was about done. The sweet potatoes were still crunchy. I used the Red Wine Velvet sweet potatoes, which are pretty sweet. Madge is very kind to me, I like to experiment with everything I do. I have been out raking leaves to put on the garden, I wish they were shredded so they would stay in place better....See MoreNew seedlings 2024
Comments (19)There are some fantastic seedlings in this posting. Debra: BLUE OVER YOU x ATTAM (love the color) THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE x BLOOD OF MARTYRS (rich color, halo and white edge. I think I commented on it during bloom season. ROMAN COHORT x THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE (Great color and tall) Nan: BLACKBIRD'S SONG x EGGPLANT LUMINOSITY (Awesome rich dark colors!) Brad: WILSON SPIDER x CARMEN RENEE (Great color and I love the size of the bloom). Here is my only new seedling to bloom this year. This is out of EMERALD STARBURST x CLIFFJUMPER. I love the petal color and the big green throat. Not really happy with the petal placement. I will have to move this one out of the seedling bed to really see what it can do. This is the first bloom ever for this seedling out of BASS GIBSON x SASSY SHANNON. Most likely a bridge plant. I will have to see what it does this year. 29 Flags over Conway x Ultimate Illusion. It is ok. May be heading for the compost pile after this year. Here is another one of the EMERALD STARBURST x CLIFFJUMPER. Petals are better placed. I would like better color saturation on the sepals. That is all from me. David...See MoreNew Fall bulbs 2024: sharp price increase
Comments (8)Cecily, you make a great point. I do have a favorite nursery or two and I will still need things that I can't easily reproduce. We use a lot of bagged mulch. Liquid seaweed fertilizer has really gotten dear, but I can't see not using it. I probably only use one large bottle a season. Perennials and shrubs I still can afford to buy a few every season. As you said, careful lists and no impulse purchases should make the best compromise. And of course, buying when on sale. I just got an email for 20% off lilacs this week. And another Perennials 10 for $49. They are $5.99 individually. That's a large increase from past years. I would think a lot of the increase has to do with shipping costs. Have you tried to ship even a small box lately? We also still have a local plant sale every Mother's Day weekend. Other local gardeners who have established gardens and are always dividing and ending up with plants to share, sell and the prices are really still very reasonable. I end up with a lot for my money. And I know one of the sellers and he starts seeds in the winter to sell as a hobby and he makes a lot of money on that one weekend....See Morevee_new
