Help Please! Vegetables in pots; which potting mix to use??
Comments (2)Personally, I wouldn't use either of them. Bound to be some additional sources with better offerings around somewhere. Otherwise, I'd by the basics in bulk and make my own. The Container Gardening forum Anney linked you to offers many recipes for good container mixes. Dave...See MoreHelp Please! Vegetable garden in Pots; Which potting mix to use?
Comments (5)I spend a lot of time at the Container Forum, just happened to wander over here! I recommend you post on the Container forum and talk to Al (Tapla) and JAG (Justaguy). The first mix will definitely be frowned on, the second mix is preferable if those are your only choices...with 50% fines it may retain water longer than optimal but that depends on your particular microclimate. Ideally you should need to water every day, means the mix is well drained with good gas exchange and fresh oxygen to the roots daily, think of container gardening as a cross between hydroponics and aeroponics...if you find yourself only needing to water every 2-3 days due to moisture retention then you won't have an optimal root environment and best results possible. Good luck. Tom...See Moreinexpensive pot filler faucet rec's
Comments (12)what i hear is that both of you like them. Get one. It makes you look like you are serious about cooking. Or making spaghetti. Be aware that there is no place to put the water if anyone toys with opening it when a pot is not under it. I think that they are all high flow. As high as allowed. The theory is that you need to save 1.7 seconds when you fill your largest pasta pot. And, they only blast water; you cannot get a gentle stream. But, this might be all wrong: it is impossible to try faucets with real pressurized water in the supply lines in the showroom. I wish we could try them all out and post the videos. Do you have more than one source of water in your kitchen? A prep sink? Cool water from a fridge water line? A filtered drinking water tap? If there's only one faucet, you have a workflow bottleneck. There are a few, very few, kitchen sink faucets that let you get water from two sources at the same time through the one cartridge (mixer valve); these are usually the pro style faucets that look like storks and cranes with a spring neck; they have both a swiveling spout and a power wash spray on a hose housed in a spring. How far away is your sink from the cooktop? Distance. Hth....See MoreI need some help making my first potting mix please
Comments (4)I don't know.... Most homemade potting soil mixes are complicated and expensive enough to make you wish you went to the store and bought some. Priced a bag of perlite or vermiculite lately? I mostly improvise. I had a real successful fig mix by mixing peat moss roughly 50-50 with fine screened (1/4 inch) compost. It's just exploding this year. I've also riffed on the "gritty mix" formula by adding diatomaceous earth sweeping compound I got at the auto parts store. (Use respiratory protection!). One thing about my homemade stuff is that it's a lot more durable than store bought potting mix. The stuff is usually better the second year than the first. Don't mix it with garden soil but don't sweat it too much either. I'm like you, though. Spending lots of money on bags of this and that is not where it's at. I try and keep my bag purchases to commodity type things....See Moremxk3 z5b_MI
