Huge Boston Fern
Comments (14)growhappy, Oh yes, cash is good too! I don't do anything for humidity, neither did the former owner. I have another boston fern I have had for years (8" pot) that looked a little sad for a while after bringing it home, but eventually it started to look nice and green and healthy, kinda like a ficus benjamina tree, they lose the old growth when moved and fast, with a fern, it's a little at the time, replacing the old fronds with new that can take the lower light/humidity. Thanks Diane, A beauty parlor makeover would be very nice!I better make an appointment quick! Thanks shiver, That hat hair has got to go!I sure hope it perks up soon! This one seems to want to drop off pieces of the ends a lot. Thanks Toni, I have it sitting in front of a west picture window, there are trees out front, so in a way it gets a little more light, but then again there is a little hangover roof above it which I wish wasn't there. The previous owner kept this fern in front of a curtain-less VERY LARGE north window for years and it did very well there. I have a feeling it's going to look worse before it gets better! tootswisc, My smaller version does the same thing, gets more brown tips/fronds in winter from central heat/lower light I guess, then in the spring sends out some new "spray" growth and only on occasion get's a brown tip or two. I have not seen any spores for some reason, on the 8" fern, or this big one. I guess that's a good thing, no brown powder to clean up! Billy Rae...See MoreFerns/non-ferns soil recommendations?
Comments (2)Two brief comments: The Asparagus isn't a fern. They have "fern" in the common name, but this is just one of the many times where common names are downright misleading. The only thing that jumps out at me as being a bad idea here is Aegopodium podagraria. Maybe it's better behaved in California, but in Indiana this is a noxious weed in gardens, choking out just about anything else and incredibly difficult to eradicate once it's gotten established. Comments (5)Hi Don't confuse "Tree fern mounts with Long fibered Sphagnum moss The mounts are the trunks of tree ferns compressed and formed into various shapes usually for the purpose of growing epiphytes ,mostly orchids . I've used them for many years in the form of pots, sheets even in the shape of bunnies lol I grow 5 kinds of tree ferns but have had no luck getting orchids to grow on the living ferns .Interestingly they produce a fiber that repels epiphytes from attaching . Dead ,the orchid will happily grow right into it. They discourage the use of tree fern mounts because they have wiped out whole forests harvesting them for that purpose. If you want to mount orchids use cork bark works as well and is a renewable resource. though if growing indoors would think a poor choice ?? gary...See MoreCan anyone help me identify this fern? Comments (18)Ok it still hasn't bloomed but if you look closely in the center it looks like it's trying to! :) I'll post another photo when it actually opens....See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
