Veggie Tales - November 2020
Comments (211)Richard, that sounds cold for your area. Guess you will get your exercise the next few days. Yesterday I did a final turning of compost in my makeshift bin at my community plot. It is breaking down well. I hope the latest aeration and nutrient additions will get most of it broken down by spring. That is when I plan to work with it next and hopefully have good compost to use. If nothing else, I am glad I could put lots of plant wastes into my makeshift bin instead of the trash cans people were told to use....not for composting but for general trash pick up. I don't like to see nutrients go to the landfill. I'd rather give up a corner's worth of growing space and do some composting....See MoreVeggie Tales Feburary 2023
Comments (51)Yesterday was a picture perfect day in this neck of the woods...er...city. My late afternoon walk revealed that it was remarkably calm. So I jumped into action, broke out my sprayer and dormant oil, and sprayed my peach trees. Today's going to be nearly as 'warm' but the winds return. I just love it when all the stars align, I have the time to spray, AND the weather cooperates. I checked on my garlic and nearly all the varieties are showing sprouts of an inch or so above the mulch....See MoreVeggie Tales >>> May 2023
Comments (68)Jumping outside between the showers it looks like the peas have 1-2 more pickings before they're exhausted. 2 plantings of late corn will replace them along the trellis. The broccoli is also kaput now, and will compost their remains tomorrow. The remaining 4 purple cabbages are very close to harvest so that row will become free for some back-up watermelon plants. Looking a late season for melons this year. The squash is blooming now and the cukes are just starting to produce both male & female buds. The sweet potatoes are showing the beginnings of vines and the 2nd corn is 3" high now as the 1st corn hits the 18" mark. The bush beans are now blooming so we'll switch from shelling peas to snapping beans soon. The asst cantaloupes (Ambrosia, Sugar Cube, Honeydew, & Crenshaw) are faring better than the watermelons at this point but each are still in the pre-vining stage. The tomatoes are setting nicely and the peppers are starting to bloom as the 1 eggplant gets its act together. All Lettuces are still sweet too....can you tell it's still raining outside? ;-)...See MoreVeggie Tales >>> August 2023
Comments (44)Greetings from the Northwest! My bride and I just returned from San Diego (together with a side trip to Tijuana for dental work). As usual after a trip the garden was a jungle but things mostly did well. After a long dry spell is starting to rain a bit here which is welcome and more like usual. There is about 35 lb of tomatoes in the freezer harvested while we were gone, mostly from the hoop house. Like Cindy my outside tomatoes are just beginning to bear. The peppers are amazing! Plants are covered and we will be making salsa this week. Beans are late too, we have been eating the bush beans as fast as they grow. I pulled those when we got back and the pole beans on the trellises are just forming the first beans now. So far I have two nice Cinderella pumpkins. The one sitting on the gray board is up on top of a Laurel hedge, where the pumpkin vine just grew up through the hedge and spread out on top. Sadly I lost all of my favorite winter squash, although we have plenty of trombocino and can let some of them stay on to become winter squash....See Morevgkg Z-7 Va
