are these tomato hornworms, or a tobacco hornworms?
Comments (9)Having trouble keeping the two hornworms straight? I recently heard this tall tale and will never forget which is which again: The tobacco hornworm likes to smoke tobacco products so much that he has cigarette shaped markings on his side (the straight diagonal lines). The tomato hornworm does not like tobacco....maybe is even an ex-smoker. He has broken cigarettes (V shaped markings) adorning his sides. I've found lots of these caterpillers on tomatoes and a few on potatoes, but never found any on the nearby peppers even though all three are favorite foods. After seeing what's left of your pepper, I'm glad they never made it to my peppers. Tomatoes always grow much quicker for me and still stand a chance after the hornworms. The peppers would probably be done for the year....See MoreTomato Hornworm Egg Cycle Photos
Comments (14)Lisa, These pictures are magnificent and absolutely fantastic macros! I am planning buy Canon 760D, but your Nikon90D looks ideal. What is your recommendation for Macro (flowers and vegetables) and Telephotos (birds)... I am thinking about following DSLR System; Canon 60D + 18-135mm Kit Lens : 1300 $ Canon 10-300mm IS USM Lens : 500 $ Canon 50mm Lens : 130 $ Total : 1930 $ Cheers -Chandra...See MoreUsing a net to combat tomato pinworms
Comments (1)I think a fine net would be a good start. I did two things when I had the problem a few years ago. First, I watched the tomato plants closely and anytime I saw a leaf with a rolled up edge, i squeezed it...and inevitably squished the little green worm. I did this a lot! Second, I put out a mosquito light (ultraviolet) and it attracted many moths, and hopefully the small ones that produce the tomato pinworm. Of course, the problem with a net is that it isolates the plant from your fingers and your eyes...so make sure it's on really well with no gaps anywhere. I haven't had a problem for two years now, I don't know if it was just luck or if my two solutions worked. I still keep an eye out for rolled leave edges, but the pressure is off right now....See MoreTomato Hornworm Activity
Comments (4)I believe early heat and humidity will bring them out earlier. Last year I saw a few at the start of May and it was in the 90s in my back yard in February. One trick to keeping them off your tomatoes is to plant something they like much more, like Datura. I did that one year that we had them especially bad and they completely stripped my Datura down to it's lower branches and left everything else alone in my yard. The datura was back to normal like nothing had happened to it within a few months. The downside to Datura is the seed pods, they are just another thing to clean up....See Moredaninthedirt (USDA 9a, HZ9, CentTX, Sunset z30, Cfa)
