Last year, North Botanical Gardens had a nice end-of-summer sale, where it was a buy 2, get one free on certain types of ornamental grasses. Of course, that does not mean they will do that this year. But in general, if you wait until the end of august and into September sales, you can get good prices on grasses. The Phantom Gardener also had some good fall sales, with 50 - 75% off on grasses. Granted, your choice at the end of the season is not always the best, but when some of the grasses have done with the seedheads, and pretty much look dead in the containers, you can get them quite cheap ! Last year, I just stuck about 5 small containers into my mulch heap, and they lasted fine through the winter. Also, if I buy a large container (say a 2 gal), I cut it into 2 or 3 plants - grasses are super hardy for the most part.

I don't think I have the answer for you, since I'm just starting to dabble in grasses. There are lots of people on this forum who know much more than I do, but I have some comments anyway. First, I always grow purple fountain grass in a pot, and although it's technically a perennial, it's not hardy north of something like zone 9. This is just by way of a warning in choosing a perennial grass. I'm thinking of tryiing Japanese Blood Grass as a hardy alternative, but the effect is very different, it's more spiky and less fountain-y and the color is bright red mixed with bright green, as opposed to the calm burgundy of the fountain grass. A very different effect, but possibly worth trying. Second, I have a blue fescue in a pot that looks pretty nice, but is not anything really special - I just needed the blue for an arrangement of pots and happened to see this locally. It's been reliably hardy for me for several years, no surprise. It winters in the garage, not because it couldn't take the winter on the deck but because I want to save the terra cotta pot; most of the ones I've left out over winter have cracked. It gets watered maybe twice in the winter, when there's awarm spell.. OK, third comment just came to me. I bought a cool-looking chartreuse grass this spring, on a whim, for another arrangement of pots where there were variegated plants with similar tones in the foliage, so this would complement the assortment pretty nicely. It turns out that it's a carex that wants lots of water - would actually be happiest in a swampy locale. Since I'm not that good at babying plants in pots, it's probably not going to work out in this arrangement. The point being, pay attention to the requirements of the plant before you choose your grass, unless you want to spend a lot of time pampering it.

i dont have them.... not hardy in z5 i have heard of one using a chainsaw ... and you ought to do better with a pruning saw.. such as the one at the link below .... i get cheaper versions at tractor supply ... the blade has opposing sharp points ... amazing ... i can go through a 1 inch branch in maybe 3 swipes.. if that ... and the folding allows you to stick it in your back pocket ... the right tool for the right job... always makes it easier .... you are a hosta gardener.. you need a tree pruning saw ... not necessarily the one at the link.. but that type ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: its the dual cutting surfaces
