Is this a weed or a tree?

A local By-law officer told me it was a tree, but the leaves look exactly like weeds I find along fences.

Anyone confirm what this is for sure? I think it was tiny in the spring and now is about 14 feet tall.

It is both. It's a weed tree. A Callery pear.

a horribly invasive tree... in some areas ....

there are a lot of weed trees.... and they all start from rogue sees.. usually dropped by birds.. who perch on fences.. or gutters.. etc... so its not surprising where you are finding them ...

Looks like some type of Ash tree. Fraxinus is the genus name, there are several species of it. We have Green Ash in my area.

27,30 and 34 are common buckthorn (probably 31 and 32 as well). Probably one of the most invasive woody plants in northern IL. I would recommend removing them and any others you might find and planting something more desirable. It is a good investment in the long run.

That's a plant called Velvetleaf....a weed. Abutilon theophrasti is the Latin name, I believe.

I have used Roundup around the base of many trees and it has never harmed the trees. I would never (again) use a weed barrier like plastic. I believe the rule-of-thumb for mulching around trees is no more than 6" deep around the tree.
