Planting Acorus Grasses Into Containers

I want to place an Acorus genus grass into a container that has a fairly moisture-retentive container soil. Is it safe to bare root this grass, as long as I keep the root mass wet? Do I need to take any special precautions before attempting to do this, like leaving the rootball immersed for a few hours before the planting?

I wouldn't bother to bare root. IMO that is just an extra and unnecessary step. This is a very tough plant, tolerant to pretty much any abuse other than dry soils.

Is this a newly purchased plant or a transplant? One might argue more of a case for one over the other but I would not rush to bare root either way.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) This is a new plant in its original container and original soil mix.

Normally I bare root new plants going into an existing mixed-plant container in order to give them a better container soil, but in this case, it might make sense to leave the grass in a moisture-retentive soil since it wants the added moisture.

Hmmmm..... Wonder what you consider giants. All the Miscanthus sinensis cultivars will do well for you in zone 5. Some of the bigger ones include Roland & Goliath Miscanthus floridus (aka gigantius) should also do well for you - it is certainly one of the biggist grasses out there. Saccharinum ravennae (aka Erianthus ravenae) is also quite tall however, not as vigorous in zone 5 as it it further south. Arundo donax is another tall one that should do well for you. Containers?? Well, aside from the considerations of the container surviving the winter ..... I have had luck with Miscanthus purpurescens, Calamagrostis brachytricha & Elymus arenarius overwintering in large half whiskey barrels. Unfortunately, none of these are giants .... A.

The grasses probably won't survive your winter, above ground in containers. You're already on the cold side of their hardiness range, and as you've read, common thought is you lose 2 zones when in containers. They would have to be hardy to zone 3 to survive.

Have you tried placing a couple of liquid boric acid ant bait stations on or near the container? Terro makes an excellent product...the liquid remains inside the plastic stations, the ants devour it in a few hours, and die.

crushedpurple, they will flop if they don’t get enough sun, too much water, or too much fertilizer. Also, they prefer a leaner soil I think. Chances are yours will stand up once they get adjusted to their new environment; if you just recently got them they were probably not getting the light they needed especially if they were growing indoors. From what I can tell your first 2 containers look to be a good size to start; they made need uppotting by the fall depending on growing conditions this summer. One piece of advice for storing, I have found that tipping over larger pots helps to prevent possible root rot when temps start to warm up and fluctuate in the late winter/early spring. This is particularly true for hostas anyway (I have lost some due to this reason); may not apply to grasses but it might not be a bad idea to try. Good luck!
