Ground cover ideas/help for large area
Comments (6)Funny enough, I just planted some Sedum ternatum which prefers part shade. I'm not sure how it would do in dense shade. It's also a US native, which I was very excited to discover. It has such a pretty shape to it. I planted it on the north side of my house and it seems to be doing well so far. I included a link about it below. Here is a link that might be useful: Sedum ternatum...See MoreNative ground cover for San Jose area
Comments (9)Is this a sun or shade area, or part of each? That will help people with suggestions. "native ground cover to help keep invasives out." Well that's the rub...invasive weeds can take over native areas easily and out compete the natives, that's what makes them invasive. So you would need to get the invasive weeds out first, usually with an herbicide like Round Up or Brush Killer, then plant the natives. And you'd need to be vigilant the first few years to weed out any invasive that popped back up. Do you want natives because you want to have a native garden, or is it for low water use? Because there are lots of plants, not necessarily native, that may be better at competing with weeds, that are also low water use. Here's a good article from Las Pilitas Nursery about natives and invasive weeds. They're a really good CA native plant nursery and resource . Lots of great articles and tips on planting native gardens. Las Pilitas Weed Control...See MoreNeed ground cover ideas for a small sloped area
Comments (0)We have sandy loam soil on a freshwater lakefront in Northern California zone 9b and just installed some sod. We have a couple little sloped areas that need something to hold the runoff. Pic #2 shows a little mini mud slide only because the entire area was excavated and not compacted much at all. We would like something with a bit of year round color and not too tall or bushy (blocking views). Rather than fill the space with just one thing we might like some variety so are open to suggestions. And nothing too expensive! :-) These areas are not on a drip and will just get overspray and ground water from the sprinklers for the grass. TIA...See MoreGround cover for large area in Northern Utah
Comments (10)IMO, the aubrieta is a very poor choice for this situation. Too exposed and too dry and it can get some winter dieback if not groomed routinely so only evergreen-ish :-) And it is not really a groundcover but more of a clumping spreader (if that makes sense) - you would need a ton of the plants to fill that space! I'd suggest something like bearberry/kinnikinnick, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi. Native to much of North America, extremely cold tolerant, tough as nails, drought tolerant when established and fully evergreen. Tiny white flowers in spring followed by red berries that appeal to wildlife. And each individual plant has an ability to spread out 6' or more, so maybe a third of the number of plants required compared to aubrieta....See MoreWill S
