Ninebark pruning question

I have a 'Summer Wine' Ninebark and I see that I have a branch that has green leaves rather than the desired dark leaves. Should I prune it right at the join? I'm including two pictures. (don't mind the weeds, lol)

I get those out

do down stem as far as possibe and try to cut or pull deeply. it may or may not grow back. watch for others

i would go all ncis on it.. and junior archeologist..

get down on your hands and knees with a hand shovel, tablespoon and paint brush and expose where it is connected to the tree.. and properly prune it out...

i wonder if the stuff they put on crabapples should be applied... to stop future suckering... just a thought.. i could be wrong on that.... it might be crab specific...

Thanks for getting back.Actually,I wasn't trying to make them smaller,since height isn't an issue-I just wanted them fuller.I'm starting to see some new growth on the bottom-but,I think you're right-I shouldn't have cut them that low,but should have taken out some more of the older growth.Also,its been like a desert around here this spring and I know that they like it when its wet.These are pretty vigorous plants,though,so I think they'll do fine-it may take some time,though,I guess.

Pruning before June (when they flower) will remove those flower buds so any pruning done now until such a time they flower surely won't hurt the shrub(s) but as I say, no flower show next year. In essence, you want to prune any flowering shrub only after it flowers (you have up to one month after it flowers to do the pruning without 'damaging' any future flowers/flower buds). In your case with the Ninebark, pruned it back hard (experience will tell you each year just how much 'hard-pruning' is necessary for you to be satisfied with it's height and width for each upcoming flowering year. No, not same issue. These will turn purple, just give them some time to finish developing pigments.

So both of you are saying take out the main branch, not just the green leaved portion?

No im not saying that

just the green sprout

t thought it was coming from the base like a sucker.

but dig down in there to get out the origin of green sprout.

To my eyes it appears to be coming from the main stem. Just cut it off close to the main stem and hope it won't come back.

I'll be crawling around there tonight, doing some clipping! The shrub is currently 6' x 6' and truly stunning. I highly recommend it if you have room.

Yup. I love Ninebarks lots but as you said and as I recall was discussed in a spring thread "if you have room" is the key phrase.
