Dendrobium orchid - flowers gone - now what?
Comments (10)What type of Den do you have? Some (nobile types) flower along the length of the cane with flowers comming off all along it. Do NOT cut this type back. Others bloom in a similar way to a phal with a spike comming out of the top of the cane. This spike carries all of the flowers well clear of the cane itself. This spike can be cut back within an inch or so of the cane when it has finished blooming....See MoreDendrobium Hollywood Orchid Help
Comments (3)I'm having trouble viewing your photos (my computer problem, not yours) but your orchid appears to be a hard-cane, phal/dendrobium. I don't think it is a nobile type but couldn't enlarge your photo. Your plant likes high light, warm and dry. Eastern sun is not enough. It should not be treated like a Phal. Move it to stronger light, only water when dry. Do not over water. It is normal for them to lose their leaves on their oldest canes. I can't tell from the photo, but new growths usually appear from the base of the last growth. I only fertilize lightly when they are making new growths. Good luck and I apologize for my computer! Comments (4)Both are probably warm growing hard cane Dendrobium with a long flower stem like this.. It is normal for a cane a few growths back from the newest growth to lose all its leaves at some time during the year. Regarded as difficult here and i would not repot them with winter coming on. Seek out some detailed cultivation notes. You might find them as Hard-Cane or Phal. Type Dendrobiums....See MoreDid I leave Dendrobiums outside too long...
Comments (10)Well, it was actually a speaker at the OSWP October meeting who told me he leaves his orchids outside in night temps in the high 30's. He said that as long as it is not below 35, the plants would do fine. They are phal type dendrobiums. So, next year, I will take them in when the temps at night are no lower than 55. I guess when I do, I need to make sure that the inside temp is as close to the outside temp and gradually warm things up. Also, I will have the lights up and running before the plants come in. This was my plan, but our school district decided to go on strike for 5 weeks, so my kids were home from mid-Oct to Mid-Nov and there was no way I could either foresee this or get the lights up with the kids home. Hopefully things will be better with the dendrobiums next year. My cattleyas look good and they were out in 39 degrees, too. I do see sheaths, so I guess they faired better in the cold. Now to see if they actually bloom (which will be the first year for me). I'm not perfect, gang, but I am much better and still willing to learn and listen to all of you- many thanks. I have no problem with oncidiums and phals anymore. They grow, they bloom. Even my big Paph. -- it's always in bloom, one sequential bloom after another. I am so proud, I wanted to take it to the Nov. OSWP meeting. Perhaps easy for all of you, but a big accomplishment for me. Thank you. Liz...See Moregetgoing100_7b_nj
