Plant idea needed
My lamb's ear seeded around. A lot. Anyway, I have a small patch behinnd a daylily/coreopsis that I would like to replace with something else. The area is 12 x 12 but I could probably go 18 x 18. As you can see in the photos, there is Coreopsis 'Zagreb', sundrops, a daylily and lamb's ears. Behind it are newly planted Aquilegia chrysantha 'Denver Gold' (columbine). To the side is Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' (Goldenrod) (some of that is also coming out). So suggestions needed for the patch of lamb's ears that is being removed. I'd rather not have a spreader and this garden is yellow, white and orange.

Comments (3)How about Euonymus? (Euonymus fortunei `Green and Gold' is gorgeous!). It will take the sun, love the moisture, and is in the shorter end of your preferred height range -- it's also evergreen. Comments (22)No, we are not limited in space and want to create something that enhances and compliments our large patio area. I like the idea of a sweeping curve that wraps around, and agree that in order to fit the existing design, we should go beyond the wall footing and stretch it at least 5-6 ft out, in a curve. or not do it at all ! Our lawn area is huge, like a park with many big trees, we have no kids or dogs, are seniors. Ultimately want it to look pretty yet reasonably low maintenance bec there are other landscaped areas all around the house and two vegetable gardens as well, already demanding a lot of attention. It will get hot there in summer, facing mostly S, a bit E. What I already have that may need relocating soon anyways and some of it could go there: about 8 -10 domestic columbines and several wild columbines, (I think wild columbine can grow on shallow soil, or any crevice..., but then I can not plant anything taller in front, and wild columbine grows only in spring...), Annabelle hydrangeas, butterfly bush, about 3 or 4 Chinese delphinium, various echinacea, English lavender (other varieties sadly are not hardy for zone 5) and 1-2 rose of Sharon. I know I know for Southerners they are invasive, but trust me, in our climate many keep dying due to ice rains, icy winds and other heavy winter damage... In other areas we have eonymous, spirea, evergreens and various hostas coming out of our ears, could use them here too, but really not in love with them. I know you already have a strappy leaf shape with the daylily but I wondered about Japanese Forest grass. It’s in my pic below the large Acuba shrub. The grass can take some sun. It does spread to make a larger clump but not to show up in other areas & it’s easy to either divide or just dig out some to keep to a size. Mine has been in @ 4 years. You see I have a gold / yellow theme too with red sprinkled in with more Heuchera! I just replaced 3 huge Rock Rose Cistus ”Micki” on left side of path & the 3 small but bright yellow green shrubs are replacements - Kaleidoscope Abelia. This is north side of yard & right side is shade, left is sun. @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK note about repeating something you already have for a cohesive look is a good point but I think a specific color scheme can also acheive a cohesive look..I do have lots of repetition with plants all around front & back yards, lots of yellow, plus lots of varigated plants as you see with my Acuba & Butterfly Maple - have 3 of those. There are huge fir trees on large property behind me so all this pattern & texture is a contrast to them!

10 months agoMy immediate thought was a Dusty Miller. I have it in my mostly green-yellow-white garden. It is the silver plant at the right.
It blooms yellow flowers in summer
I see you already have coreopsis. There are other varieties that might go well in the scene. the one in the middle back is with dark red heart.
The very full pure yellow variety. Nicely compact about 18-24” tall
'White Swan' coneflower is also a good idea.
