How do I keep cats from eating plants?
Comments (14)Training helps... easier if your cat hates the spray bottle as mine does. They can be taught "no", just like a dog. Some are more stubborn than others though, so good luck. I make a loud "psst" noise, or clap my hands or stomp my foot as I say no firmly, the noise can help startle kitty into paying attention just like a spray bottle. I have glass shelves across most of my growing windows so plenty of space to keep plants out of reach... I also do not allow my cat on hard surfaces, like shelves and tables so that helps a great deal. It takes time, just be consistent. Eventually kitty should form the association of if I do this then that thing I dislike will happen. Dogs are easier, as praising them when you get home for not terrorizing your domicile goes a long way. One day when I have floor plants we may need a re-education session, but I often place my big ZZ plant on an end table near my couch and we havent had any trouble. I do also grow cat grass on occasion, and offer it to her next to her food dish so as to keep the message very clear that this one is ok....See MoreHow do I know if fill is compacted enough?
Comments (8)I filled in my inground pool in 2006. It had concrete block walls, vermiculite floor and vinyl liner. My friend has a mini excavator and demolished the hole thing and dug up the floor for drainage. We put the walls, perimeter concrete decking, pool pump and filter, some fencing, etc into the hole. We then had 2 huge dumps of unscreened soil brought in then a big dump of screened soil in whing my buddy tilled and leveled along with some lime and milorganite. That was September 2006. I seeded the same day and had lush grass by October. Its now 2010 and I have had zero settling....See MoreHow to prevent escapes from stackables
Comments (3)I think the goal is to make it as pleasant as possible for them in the worm bin, so they don't want to escape. Even with (what I think to be) ideal conditions I still have one or two escapees every couple of weeks. Outside of leaving a light on them at all times, I don't think there is much I can do about it. I suppose had the bin been outside those brave ones would have been the ones to make it across the great no-worms-land to start a new colony somewhere else, Insuring the species continued survival. But in the kitchen my Tile hampers their efforts. :-) SRD...See MoreOutdoor cat owners, how do you keep them from gardens?
Comments (15)We have 2 stray outside kitties now, Sam the siamese who has never been shy and follows me when I'm outside the gate, he will sit at the gate and meow at me if I'm inside. I think he is the sibling of BC, a black cat that adopted us just before Ike, and who evacuated with us. There is another black kitty out there who may be their littermate as I first saw it across the school yard about the same time. It is very skittish and I can't even get close enough to tell if male or female. Sam is going to the vet to get fixed as soon as we get back in the houe. I think the guy across the alley is responsible for them, I've found siamese mix kittens before. I'd like to confront him but have no proof-except empty litter boxes outside his house and the cats hang around his yard. BC prefers to go outside, so do my 2 cats who have the run of the house and yard-they choose to stay out most of the time. BC prefers the alley-dry and sandy, Oscar the neighbors yard behind her garage, no idea with Gomez or Sam. Gomez(female) is the only one I've had problems with spraying in the house, and not often. I feel bad for Sam sitting outside the gate, he's such a pretty cat, blue cross-eyes, perfect posture. I feed him and pet him about every day, sometimes I don't see him. Tally HO!...See Moremarmiegard_z7b
