I am fairly new to gardening and new to this website. I grew some avocado trees from seed for my mother for when she moved to Florida. She moved into to a condo without a yard and isn't interested in keeping them indoors. They are about 4 or 5 years old now (not sure what the parent tree is) and I was considering grafting(Hass? -open to suggestion) them myself as a container plant. I have two sunrooms, one facing south, so I think they will do well if I treat them right (also planning on adding growing lights). Up to now they have been treated poorly since I was planning on giving them away and I didn't want them to get too big (e.g. teeny tiny pot and never transplanted or fertilized, etc). I also bought a small lime tree and meyers lemon tree this year and would like to try and graft a regular lemon branch to the meyers lemon tree and key lime branch to the lime tree. I have not had any luck searching the internet for where I can get budwood/scionwood. Is it possible? I would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks for the feedback. I bought the little cado specificaly because it's a small one and i've seen multiple articles that it works well and will fruit in a panter. My main purpose to get the little cado was to keep it small, and keep it in a planter fo a few years until i finally move to a new house. While at summerwinds nursery the other day, i saw a different type of avacado...i forget the name, but it had a fruit on it already and it was only in a 5 gallon pot! (my original little cado was in a 15 Gal and a heck of a lot more expensive than a $40 5 gallon). Makes me think about getting one of that variety and replacing the one i have now. but i have to go back to see the type and see if there's any details on growing in a planter. My little cado had no problem last winter...this past winter though here in San Jose area we had an extended freeze for about 2 weeks and that's what did it in. I'm confident they will grow here in a planter. Maybe I'll buy a new one for the planter and put the old one in the ground. anyway....bummed at the current status of the tree but hoping it will turn the corner.

Laurel wilt is one my major foci of my research program and can bring you to speed on the most recent developments. Do you happen to know the cultivar? Cut into the sapwood and look for streaking. Do you see evidence of the ambrosia beetles yet?? (frass and small holes)

HI everyone This may look like a late reply but I've just come accross this post! I'm from paris France and an avocado tree lover too!! Most people will shoot graft a very young avocado tree, about eighteen inches tall. Just cut the top off the tree, split the trunk in half for about two inches, cut the scion in a long vee shape, and insert it into the cut. Wrap the graft with a long 1/4 inch wide rubber band. The scion is best when it is the same diameter as the trunk. You can do it with a bigger tree but then you'll have to graft onto smaller branches!!! Now if anyone has access to an avocado tree (Mexicola, HAss, Bacon.... ) and could help me out and send me some cutting so I can try grafting my trees started from seed I'd definitely be grateful!!!!!!!!!
