The yard-long beans are prolific in hot-humid weather, also the Florida speckled butter bean (a Lima bean) will also produce very well. Cow peas will also withstand our hot-humid weather in summer. The problem with most other bean varieties even though they will flower the high humidity during our summer rainy season causes the pollen to clump together and not pollinate the flowers. Lou

Yes, amaranth is a great warm season crop. The greens are better cooked than anything you can buy in the market, and the seeds can be harvested in the fall for mixing with flour or popped. I'm surprised nobody mentioned sweet corn or sorghum. Also cotton (as a novelty), sunflowers (for the birdfeeder, dye, or roasting), sweet potatoes, peanuts, basil, and artichokes (from transplants), to name a few. Here near Santa Fe I'm able to grow all the cool season crops throughout the summer with no special care, so I'm guessing that the 10 degree warmer climate of Albuquerque should not rule these out completely. Maybe some partial shade or a good cooling mulch of straw is all that's needed. Cool season crops that seem especially tolerant of the hot summer include: certain lettuce types, cilantro, dill, peas, arugula, and even spinach. The least heat tolerant in my experience are the brassicas: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale, although they usually make it through and provide me with a good harvest. Good luck...

I recently made a list of Tomatoes which I understand do well in Hot Summer weather. IâÂÂm certain this is not all varieties but it is a good starting point. Pearson Improved ⢠The Pearson Improved tomato plant produces large, red, flattened-globe-shaped, smooth-skinned fruit. This type of tomato averages about 7 oz. and is determinate, which means all of its fruit ripens in a short period of time. It sets in 80 days and is considered good for canning. Porter's Pride ⢠Tomato Growers Supply Company describes this canning tomato as medium-size with "larger, rounder and bright red" fruits. The tomato is plum-shape with tender skin and a sweet flavor. Its heartiness makes it suited for dry regions such as Texas. It is indeterminate and takes about 70 days to set. Abe Lincoln Heirloom Open Pollinated Tomato has beautiful large dark red fruits .... it does well in many growing conditions, especially in hot and humid regions ...

I used to have terrible luck with containers, but then I found this great soil in Cloverdale, CA called Big Roots, they home make it at a place called Soil King. Its a business that sells only specialty gardening items, its not a chain. I had great soil in San Francisco and I had no room for containers in the house and no where to lift them. The soil is very bad soil, since I just started the garden. I was not going to let them stay in containers, but I just could not get the soil ready in time, so containers was only a short term idea, but it's working so well, that I am glad I took a chance. It did cost a lot of money to buy the soil and the containers. The own roots roses can stay in the containers for at least a year. The full sized ones, I am going to try to plant maybe in the fall. I don't think I want to transplant in full summer heat of over 100.
