What is wrong with my pansies?

last year

Bought four flats of pansies from a wholesale greenhouse. All pansies are exhibiting the same symptoms on leaves. i suspect some kind of disease and have been looking at downy mildew but see no white fluffy growth on the leaves. wondering if plants will grow out of it or they are done for.

It is possible that they were not hardened off between sitting in the greenhouse and going out into your garden unprotected. Was there a great difference in temperature between the two?

agree.. they were in a cozy warm greenhouse.. and you moved them across the city.. repotted them.. and put them outside in the cold..

to say they are stressed.. might be an understatement ...

and the cold didnt help ..

put them in the garage.. at night.. until its a sure 60 plus outside a;ll day and night ... ... but not in the house.. they are not houseplant ... the garage is part of properly hardening them off to the coziness of the greenhouse ..

the damaged flower will not repair.. pinch it off ....

they will be fine... some of them can winter over outdoors in winter... as long as they arent pampered in a warm greenhouse....

With the warmer weather we've had aside from the cold snaps and freezes, I wouldn't be surprised if it were cats. I know that on the nicer days I've been seeing butterflies here, though I don't really raise cats of track butterflies, so I couldn't tell you what they are. I think that's going to be one of the things I do while I'm down after the upcoming surgery. I'll learn to ID more of the butterflies around here. Kathy

I just noticed teeny tiny black aphids on a little yellow blooming succulent so those may be your black insects. A spray of neem oil will take care of the little suckers. A solution of soapy water will also. The cut worms are a little harder to manage as they come out at night from under the soil. Look at the base of the wilted pansy stem and if cutworms did the damage you should be able to see where they have chewed it off. I've not had a problem with them so can't suggest a solution, but found the below information on the internet. Happy gardening, aphids, cutworms, and all! Two days later. Any more thoughts now? Watering system not a problem as far as emitters or pressure. Only difference in placement is that this one is on the point. No evidence of tunneling creatures. Good. 1 of the healthy plants in picture 3 above. Not so good. Same hurting plant as above in pictures 1 and 2. Needs more water????

I’ve come to the conclusion that this is frost damage but it has been over a week since and we’ve had warm days and the pansies are starting to grow out of it. I covered them when we had really cold nights like under 28 degrees but didn’t cover on the last cold night since it wasn’t suppose to get under 30 but it did get into the twenties and that’s when I assume the damage occurred but all is good now, once the weather dries out I am going to fertilize them and they should really start to pop

Pansies are a cool season plant and do NOT require temps in the 60's before planting!! In fact, they are sold in fall and late winter/early spring as "winter annuals", meaning they can grow throughout winter, only hunkering down and halting growth temporarily if the weather turns really cold.

28F should be of no concern to them. But if they did originate from a heated greenhouse, they would have needed time to acclimate to outdoor conditions first - it is too great a temperature variation without this. Like you going outside in winter without a coat :-)) But that only requires a couple of days to accomplish.

The damage is minor and just cosmetic. You can leave the discolored leaf in place where it will be hidden by new, healthy foliage or you can carefully remove.
