Repotting oncidium
Comments (3)I have a similar one and have grown it while living in NY (Z5). Don't worry about the brown spots, that is normal. You can split it into 2 plants but I would keep it together so you'll have a nicer display with multiple spikes of flowers. I grew it outside during summer in full sun. When it came inside, it grew near a large sunny window. It certainly shouldn't grow in Phal conditions. Roots look good and you have new roots growing. I would just repot into a larger pot with good drainage. I don't think your orchid will smell like chocolate, but I'm not positive. Jane...See MoreWhat's wrong with my Oncidium Howard's Dream?
Comments (11)Shaved monkey I am in the rainy and overcast Pacific Northwest. It is grown indoors in the 65-73 degree range with 50-60 % humidity. I'm sure it reached the upper realms of this plants temperature comfort zone, though, for who knows how long. I will look into the maxi-crop. Jane- there are 2 so far unaflicted new growths and one with a yellowing spotted leaf. The new growths are putting out some new roots. Arthurm- thank you for the info. I am 2 years into my obsession with a 2 year old so I am not "up" on the nomenclature. I will, however, use that info to find some complete culture sheets. I will be attending my local orchid club meeting tonight as well; some local tips should be helpful. Thanks all! I will observe, research and wait a bit I think. If anything, being a new parent and loving orchids has taught me a little patience....See MoreAfraid to repot! Why do my repotted orchids always suffer after???
Comments (13)Arthrum: good point, the temps in my house are only kept above 65 degrees, but it still seems that some temperature hardy plants still show dislike of my repotting... Dbarron: oh my! Sounds like a tragedy! I get upset enough when I break of a new shoot! Vtandrea: thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely try it on one of my oncidiums! Jane: I live in the Oakland hills in the SF Bay Area. I grow almost all my indoor orchids in the same spot, positioned around a fireplace to control the amount of light. The facing of the house isn't the best. 80% of the light is late morning to afternoon sun . 90% of the windows are west facing :( like the house... The problem might be I repotted at the wrong time. I didn't a lot of reporting in the winter/ late fall (whoops...)...See MoreKilling another Oncidium- Any zone 10/11 Oncidium growers??
Comments (6)You're right @jane_ny, not fertilizing :P I could try hanging it outside, but aren't Oncidiums known to like cooler temperatures than our outdoor temperature? I've found other Oncidium growers in my city, and sadly, haven't seen even ONE plant with pretty leaves! They all have atleast one brown leaf tip, similar to mine, and other leaves don't look too happy either. It's probably a climate factor. Also, if they're right in their care of oncs, mine is thirsty!!...See Morechris209 (LI, NY Z7a)
