Tell me about Generosa and Renaissance roses
Comments (3)I don't know that there is much accomplished by comparing different "brands" of roses. Each category will have beautiful roses that BS like crazy, others that suffer more limited amounts of BS, and a handful that truly are disease-resistant, or nearly so. The one exception I can think of is the more recent Kordes roses--which are being bred with disease-resistance as one of their prime characteristics--but there are other Kordes roses that are not. Even David Austin is paying more attention to disease-resistance in some of his more recent offerings. Most of his earlier ones are quite BS prone. But that is probably true, as a very broad generalization, about most roses out there on the market. Only recently has disease-resistance become important to the buyer--so many nurseries are now breeding for disease-resistance. With earlier roses (in general), that was not important to the buyer, so nurseries didn't worry much about it one way or another. Kate...See MoreLost Horizons

Comments (2)Its been a wonderous summer for me, traversing the landscape looking for nurseries, and in this instance a plant farm. Located west of Mount Forest, Ontario, Wild Things is a wonderous adventure for anyone who loves field and woodland surroundings, (amazing fields teeming with perennials; and a woodland display of trilliums and other shade loving plants) and an immediate rapport with the friendly knowledgable staff. I was intrigued when I discovered it was called a "plant farm" but soon learned that many of their perennials are grown in a field, where left to the elements, they either thrive or perish. From the appearance of the cascades of colours as you drive towards the retail area, it is evident that most have thrived. Its colder and they have more snow than the GTA, but this hasn't stopped them from growing spectacular perennials! The benches have the staple perennials as well as some total eye-catchers like an Indigo Kirilowii that stuck out worse than a green thumb, so much so that I simply had to bring it home and then investigate what exactly I had purchased. So tiny and delicate with her bright leaves. There is something for the most discerning or gardeners, as well as new and exciting selections for the greenest of new gardeners like myself! I was thrilled to have the owner remember me on only my second visit and was soon engaged in a conversation that was both genuine and inquisitive. Its nice when someone wants to know your favourite plants before deciding what will look good in your garden. I was witness to the annual Labour Day Monster Plant Sale, and judging by the number of people who seemingly appeared out of the fields, this is an event that is eagerly anticipated towards the end of the gardening season. I came home with more plants than I have room for, and after planting them I decided that in preparation for future visits to Wild Things Plant Farm, I will have to create new gardens for the treasures that will surely await me next year!...See MoreCoyote renaissance?
Comments (54)We have had a good size pack (from the sound) of Coyotes living in our gully here in the Finger Lakes for several years now. They have lots of cover and plenty of rodents/ rabbits to feast on, their primary diet. I have sheep and a horse and electric net fencing, so no trouble so far. The neighbor who has a good size flock of sheep had a sheep guard dog in with the flock. No reports of coyote attacks on any of the local flocks. We do have barn cats disappear, but they do wander into the woods, so possibly cross tracks with the pack. But then we also have raccoon and fox, so maybe they are responsible. The strange thing is that the Coyotes seem to have disappeared this winter. We know there IS rabies in the area - my husband got bitten by a confirmed rabid skunk in Feb., so I am wondering if the pack was taken sick and died out. With the number of rodents and rabbits they eat, they are welcome to live in my gully, and since it is good habitat, I assume they will be back. On another note, I have had Owls living in my woods in the gully since I have lived here - 32 years - but I did not hear a single Owl this winter. I leave old and dying trees in the gully to encourage their nesting, so I know they have shelter, and am wondering what could have happened to them also. -Rosalinda...See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
