Comments (7)I confess, my instinctive reaction to reading the thread title was a shoulders hunched, "what do you mean, share?!" However, I did have an arrangement a bit like that a few years back. I rented the second floor flat in a house with a garden, and in exchange for a break on the rent, I sorted out and maintained the garden, landlord supplying the materials. I also fed/ temporarily adopted his his cat as he was abroad for work. That arrangement worked well, because I was only planning to live there for a limited time and he was planning to sell the house, so the garden (weedfilled rectangle of 'grass') needed sorting. Because I knew I wasn't staying I was able to not invest myself in the garden, and make it look ok, even if it wasn't how I would like it. In my experience it's not an unusual arrangement, but it's more commonly done with absentee landlords. I think depending on your area, finding someone willing to do garden chores in exchange for reduced rent would actually be pretty easy. The advice to get it written into the rental agreement is a good one. Finding someone to actively share the garden, in a sympatico fashion will be considerably harder - my advice is to go for the former and see if over time the tenant wants to shift into a more sharer type agreement. Gardens have a way of working on people after all. I was into my thirties before gardening awoke like an inherited disease in my blood....See MorePerplexing Purple Plant (positively NOT perilla)
Comments (12)Thank you so much already! I searched images of the Tradescantia Spathacea and while it does seem to be the right plant, there are a few things that are different enough that I'm still unsure. One, while the purple color seems to be an exact match, the Tradescantia Spathacea has green on the tops of the leaves, and my leaves are the same color, top and bottom. Could this be because they are young leaves? Also, the other thing that made me pause is that the Tradescantia Spathacea is zoned for 9 and 10. Wouldn't my zone 7 winter completely kill it, not just kill it to the ground? This plant has had no protection from weather, not even a mulch. Either way, I super appreciate the help. This is exciting!...See MoreJune Simply Pink Fotess Exchange
Comments (63)Glad you enjoyed your package, Shirley. Here's the lovely package Shirley sent to me. Thanks so much, Shirley. I was very excited to see the plants. I know it has been awhile since I got actual plants in the mail and I've never had Astilbe before and this one is pink and even had blossoms on it. The pink Crinum is fantastic, too. I have a Crinum or two planted in my garden but they've never bloomed so I don't remember what color they are supposed to be. I did move them to a different location this year with more sun so maybe that will help. Seeds: Cleome 'Rose Queen' and Snapdragon 'Apple Blossom', the note card has a butterfly on a pink flower, and then there's a calendar and pen, a pink butterfly, Mentos and Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape. What a fun package....See MoreMichael Jennings
