Where do I purchase potatoes/sweet potatoes for the home garden?
Comments (5)In NW Phoenix you can get seed potatoes at Sunrise Nursery, 59th Ave and T-Bird. Just south of T-Bird on west side of the street. I bought 3 varieties: Yukon Gold Red La Soda and Red Russet I think you should start them now. It's my understanding that the sweet potatoes like our hot temps. White russets do not do very well here. I'll attach a link that has a bit of info. HTH. Mary Here is a link that might be useful: Potato Gardening...See MoreFresh Garden Potatoes
Comments (19)For me, to get the best potato flavor, it's baked. Just a light bit of salt, possibly a few grains of pepper and only a dash of butter to let the potato flavor come through. I had posted on another forum a while back about how people don't seem to like potato flavor anymore and you would have thought I condoned putting puppies through a wood chipper! LOL Seems like people have to douse it with fat, fat and more fat, then powerful flavors to override the subtle potato flavor and then talk about how great they are! Putting cream cheese, sour cream, onion, garlic, etc in there, well some thing that's "the best potatoes!!!!", but to me why have the potato in there? (No wonder Americans are so fat!) Yes, occasionally it's fine for something different but I grew up with potatoes and still enjoy them and I like the stark simplicity of them and the flavor of the potato itself. Even good fries are a joy and the flavor comes through when properly prepared and don't need to be buried in ketchup like the Mcfry needs. But I also enjoy a meatloaf for the meat, not the inch of ketchup on it and we all know about that. Roasted potatoes are another favorite and have much flavor but it's also modified with the roasted flavor. Boiled? Well, I'd prefer steamed if given a choice. I think boiling takes away a lot of flavor (same with sweet corn). And I much prefer white and gold to red potatoes. To me, reds are like eating candles....See MoreWhat potatoes are best to use for oven roasted?
Comments (7)Any thin-skinned you see at the market will work as mentioned above. My local market has a-la-carte potatoes. I usually pick tiny ones to roast whole, medium ones that i halve and roast cut side down for crispy...usually at least 3 varieties and different skin colors for beauty, : ) The long fingerlings i often cut into 3's. So that all cook about the same time. This pic i doubt will help, lol, but for a crowd i do a mixed roast of veg...often cauliflower as well. (i only see two little bits of fingerling). Pleases the vegetarians to have lots of veg.. -i had some weird mealy purple potatoes in the mix one years, so i do try and roast a few varieties. Last holiday i had at least half a bag that had a brown weird hole in the middle of each. Such a downer trying to prep a meal after all done with shopping. Shipping and cold temps can ruin produce....See MorePotato Gardening Question
Comments (1)I've been adding soil whenever the plants are 6" above the soil line and leaving about an inch showing when I do that. When I had a couple little bits like the side pieces you're showing, I didn't worry about covering them up. They all just kept growing until they got themselves out into the sun. Once the plants got above the top of my containers (20-gallon), I couldn't really keep hilling so at that point I just let them keep growing....See Morekitasei2
