Comments (5)even if i bought wood.. to make it last.. i would have them potted in plastic and insure there were a lot of drain holes in the wood ... so it stayed as dry as possible .. so determination of the planter size.. would be a function of the pot size ... if that makes sense ... so.. at a min.. i would be thinking about a MINIMUM of a 25 gallon black pot ... see link.. no clue if that is a good price.. i got most of mine from recycle bins .... but i dont use them decoratively ... and that one is already 25 inches wide at the top .... any even in nurseries.. plants of the size you want.. BLOW OVER.. wind and stability are going to be your BIG PROBLEM ... especially if you buy them big ... and i should also point out.. that conifers have very specific potting media issues.. and what you fill the pot with will also be very important.. and its not going to be your standard bag of potting media .... i am sure you can do it.. but i doubt you are going to find the info you need here.. with the specificity you wish .... i simply dont think us tree peeps are going to have a lot of specific info for you ... other than to list the variables .... good luck ken ps: winter storage will also be an issue .... Here is a link that might be useful: link -- you shop price.. i am just showing the pot...See MoreWhat tree/s to put in my yard in St.Louis MO?
Comments (32)J0nd03- that ft.mcnair is a beautiful tree. Ill have to see what the specs are on it as far as tolerances/preferences. Tornado- no offense taken at all, I'm quite long winded myself (I am a car salesman!) and I love taking politics but unfortunately from what I have learned (perhaps its the area we live in?) most discussions about politics/govt matters turn into a pissing contest/yelling match because when someone has a differeing view than I yet cannot support their claims/reasons for their beliefs they get defensive and resort to un civilized behavior. I think it's hilarious but sure you have experenced it as well! ;) I really appreciate the info your giving me. From what I have read/picked up from folks (a good friend of mine is a horticulture major/landscape business owner) these beech trees will maintain their vibrant foliage as long as they are kept hydrated. I'm site the tree in your pics gets pruned/pest control done professionally and regularly but I'm not sure about the watering part too much?...See MoreTree frog living in planter on my deck
Comments (5)Bonnie, I have tree frogs too. They live in my hanging baskets and when I have had cold snaps, I have found them in a tupperware bowl I had forgotten that was half full of water. I did not realize it at the time, but they were keeping warm in the water. I have one of those tall rubbermaid 'sheds' that you would keep shovels and rakes in and always find them sleeping in there. so if your shed has the smallest opening for them, maybe they can keep warm in there. Have you seen those topsy turvy tomatoe hanging "plastic bags"? Last year, I had 2 families living in them. It was the greatest sight to see them 1 by 1 pop their little heads out looking for bugs at the porch light. Michelle...See MoreMoving my 1 year old citrus trees to bottomless planter
Comments (20)Hi greenman62, do you put green grass clippings, wait till dry before put wood chips? What is the reason amend the soil above the grade level not the hole? I heard the tree root will not go beyond the hole that has the amended soil and Also water will pool in the hole since surrounding dirt is clay, right?Would it be the same if amend the soil on hill/bump? I am also unclear about planter box. If I amend the dirt for the planter box, would a tree have shallow root? I am thinking of building a new planter box for a avocado tree. Unfortunately my husband amended all the dirt with compost including the hole. Hope my gold nugget will be ok. I have not transplant the two 1 new year trees yet....See MoreSigrid
