Spreading my River Cane Bamboo

The house that I purchased in Jacksonville, FL has some River Cane in the backyard which has barriers preventing it from spreading. I want to expand the barrier to expand the coverage area. How deep should I make the barrier? Once I remove the old barrier will it spread by itself? From my understating it's running bamboo.

If it is really river cane -- Arundinaria gigantea -- then it's a running bamboo. If the current barrier is doing a good job of containing it, put in new barrier to the same depth. Over time, it will spread to the new boundaries.

Europeans during the settlement phase were greeted by vast canebreaks which somewhat curiously were the best places to hunt as they were full of all manner of wildlife. Even though it was mostly a bunch of tall woody grass. So yes, your backyard canebreak will enlarge if you let it.

Hey-I've wondered for many years what that plant was,and had never heard anyone refer to it....Here in my area,I've seen it many many times.It's always a very small plant,but definitly a bamboo!!I'm gonna go dig some of it this weekend!It appears to grow very slowly-and have never observed it growing in large stands.It is always growing in very small stands,rarely over 2,maybe 3 feet tall.Mark

Kt, I agree about this southern sun! I dug up three of them this afternoon, and in doing so, I cut off the root/connection they have to the mother plant. I was concerned that, since the connecting root or stolon or whatever it is was bigger than anticipated on all three, that these weren't going to take. When I got home with them the leaves had curled inwards. I potted them to big pots and added the necessary potting soil, watered them copiously, and the leaves on the two smallest ones unfurled right away and look happy - hopefully, the bigger one will respond by tomorrow. I plan on keeping them in the shade and real wet, since those conditions are what they grow biggest in, and, hopefully, they can make enough roots in the big pots that I can plant them out at least by this fall. I've got some good wet and shady areas on my property where I can plant them. Thanks for your help! Sherry

Do you also understand that individual bamboo culms do not get bigger from year to year? When a culm comes up it reaches its final height in about 2 months and never gets any larger. In addition, you have less than ideal growing conditions and temperatures. In fact, your bamboo is only supposed to be hardy to about 0 degrees F, so that fact that it has not died completely means you are doing something right. I don't know what to tell you other than to try some other bamboo that is hardier in your growing Zone, like Ph. nuda or one of the hardier Fargesias.

I saw this article also and got excited to think that maybe more types of bamboo would be available at a lower price. But I went to their website and searched for all the bamboo and most of what they are tissue-cloning is best for the Northwest and not my Zone 10 Southeast. Guess I'll have to keep looking for bamboo the way I have been, nursery by nursery.
