David Austin's Windflower

Anyone ever had David Austin's Windflower or know someone who did? Even HMF has so few people who had it in the US, yet it is still sold in the EU and disease resistant. Any ideas where I might get it?

I hope you find it! I saw one last year and still regret not buying it. It's not commonly sold in Europe either...

Tess is such a good rose. It was on the bush 6 days and just kept getting poofier and poofier but held together. Its been a dry heat and in the 90's this past week plus uber smoky from the wildfires and literally 'raining' ash some days. Gotta love Tess! Some others doing well in the wicked heat TIMF Litchfield Angel Jude the Obscure...I swear I couldnt get enough pics of him the other day!! He is sooo ~Dreamy~ I'm obsessed with the way the buds look half open. I could get lost in those buds for hours!

If you want a fluffy pink, have you considered Princess Alexandra of Kent? She's about 3.5 x 2.5 and, according to David Austin, has a "delicious fresh tea fragrance with aspects of lemon and blackcurrants." Princess Alexandra of Kent I wouldn't know since I do not grow her, but if I had any space left open, I would definitely plant her in my garden. Austin adds that she is highly fragrant and very healthy also and "ideal for pots and containers." Really BIG blooms, I'm told. Kate

I’ve been wondering if I should have gotten Darcey Bussel instead of Munstead Wood. MW is said to be much more fragrant, but in my garden it is only fragrant when conditions are just right. It’s an okay bloomer, but flowers lose their form, size and color in the heat of summer. The flowers crisp quickly in our dry summer heat. The spring and fall flowers are wonderful though. Sheila, do you have a MW? If so, how does it compare to DB? Stephanie? Bishop’s Castle would happily grow to 6 feet in my garden if well irrigated. I keep mine rather dry and the flowers are smaller, but it mostly stays about 4 feet and bushy. When the late summer monsoons come and the weather cools down, it shoots up taller basals that get pruned down in the winter.

If you are still looking for this rose HMF says it's available from the Belgian nursery Daniel Schmitz.

They don't sell through their website, but you can email them for bare root orders.

I love the sort of rumpled look of the open blooms - DA did a HUGE favor to us, by getting the entire rose industry away from its focus on only HTs being "real" roses.

I'm pretty sure "Jon in Wessex" had it in his fabulous garden in the south of England, but he hasn't posted here in years, and I don't know if there's any way of retrieving old posts any more. In any case, I think what you're really wanting to know is if anyone in the US has it?

There was someone in Seattle that had one the year it was released in the US all those years ago. She said it did very well for her, but I have tried every which way to see if she is still in the area or has it. The problem is she posted on her blog (about 14 years ago) that she moved and did not mention taking any roses with her to the smaller house. She also had a Summer Song that she said was her best rose ever in Seattle...DA pulled it after 1 year.

Talk to any nearby independent retailers that are buying Austin roses wholesale and see if they can get it for you at this time. I know that labor shortages during the supposedly now over pandemic seriously impacted the domestic supply of Austin roses but maybe that phase has passed or is passing. I also know that when another of theirs was just coming on the market before the pandemic impact occurred I was able to ask for one in advance from a local independent and they had it for me after shipping (of barerooted Austins) had taken place. And there was only a tiny number of my variety present when I picked mine up, as I remember it all labeled so as to indicate every one of them was a special order. Point being it wasn't a matter of simply setting aside one for me from a full sized allottment of that variety that they were going to get anyway - they apparently bought it because a few of us asked for it, were in fact willing to do this for us. And only bought enough to fill our indvidual orders, were not going to have any on display for potential sales to others later that same season.

Otherwise if a kind of plant comes on the market for a short time and then is gone it means some problem quickly presented itself that killed it as a commercially viable product. This can be that it turned out to be hard to grow or hard to sell. Hard to grow as in not conforming and responding well to how involved producers have their systems set up. Or having a limitation that resulted in multiple garden center customers bringing it back to each operator. With brick-and-mortar independents being quick to drop anything that produces a number of failures at the consumer end or does not fly off the shelves in the first place - the involved filters are actually pretty restrictive. Because not only do plants presented have to be sufficiently tolerant of whatever conditions purchasers happen to place them in afterward they have to conform to prevailing ideas of what is an attractive plant while they are still in nursery sizes. With of course a marked falling off of orders from retailers resulting sooner or later in a largely discontinued wholesale production.
