Prune pentases now?

I’m in Sydney (Australia), which is a warm temperate zone. I normally prune my pentases right down in early spring, but this morning I’ve noticed new basal growth is already forming, even though we’re only two thirds of the way through winter. Could anyone advise me if it would be safe to cut back the pentases now?

I'd not prune them until all danger of frost has passed as it will encourage tender new growth.

how long until early spring down your way? .. how much sooner is pruning now.. than your usual schedule??

Keep it watered and put some mulch around it to shade the soil. And don't cut back branches because they have leaves on them that have browned - you'll be adding stem tissue loss to the leaf loss, instead of producing an improvement for the plant. Also if that is a hot wall (as in south- or west-facing) maybe move the shrub to a less intense aspect. Because you have just transplanted it - perhaps from a more shaded previous position - and this is the hottest time of the year.

As long as the tree is dormant, it can be pruned. We're not there yet. How great is this weather, by the way? It almost makes up for the horrid summer! I would not wait for new growth in spring, I'd do it sooner than that. Maybe a November to March time frame. One thing to consider is the availability of your trimmer. It seems like they're busier in the spring, cleaning up after our spring storms, which might delay your time frame into a not so great time for extensive work. When you say drastic pruning, how drastic? Topping? Removing large branches?

find the root flare ... make sure it not to deep ... there should not be branches at the soil level ... understock or not ... since its a babe.. you can leave one of them on longer.. in tree time.. whether you do it now.. or in fall .. really doesnt matter .. its not like the graft is one inch big.. and these are a foot long .. keep in mind.. every leaf is an energy making machine.. cutting off to many at one time.. can greatly impact a young plant ... in this case.. the graft looks pretty strong.. so it probably doenst matter if you take them both right now .. can we have a pic of the whole bed.. im thinking we helped design the whole.. and would like an update of the whole ... is this the driveway/road island ...??? .. if not.. im wondering whose is.. lol ... and the same comment with the noon day pix ... talk a walk after dinner .. and besides... you wont get your phone or camera covered in dirt ... doing it while you are working out there ... and do note.. later in the season ... it will be much more pleasant to walk your garden in the evening.. than in noon heat ... ken

I would say that, if these leaves survive, then at pruning time prune above these leaves.
