New Jersey Gardening Insects

Insect ID help please

last year

Noticed this bug for the first time this summer in our New Jersey yard, zone 7. Body is about size of pencil eraser, gawky legs when walking but it also flies. Also see the same exact size/shaped bug but with a red back and white spots. A positive identification would be appreciated, thanks!

Well, that third pic either looks like a juvenille squash bug or an Assassin bug. If it's a squash bug then that's bad - if it's an assassin bug then that's good. I can't really tell from your photo. Do a google.com search for both and look at the images that come up. That should help you determine which it is :-) Sorry, not sure about those first two pics. they seem stuck to the tree, in the new branches and due to the green color they just seem like part of the branch. Yes I can lift or scratch them off with fingernail. how to get rid of them? thanks.

Sprays of commercial insecticidal soap would probably stun them enough so that you could grab them and toss them into a container of soapy water.
