The seeds are probably worth a try--very little effort, nothing to lose if they do nothing. I would assume Sungold is a hybrid since fruit trees take a relatively long time to go from seed to a fruiting tree and generating a genetically stable variety would require several generations. Most fruit trees will be crosses of varieties in an attempt to get the seedling tree to express the most desired traits of each parent. Once a seedling has been identified with desirable traits, that seedling is then grafted onto rootstocks to produce clones for distribution and given a name, such as Sungold. I don't know that any apricots are anything more than partially self pollinating at best, so all seeds will technically be hybrids of two genetically distinct parents. Trying to pollinate a Sungold with another Sungold would just be pollinating with the same tree, so seeds are unlikely to result. Your seeds will thus be a cross of the Sungold and the nearby Moongold or another apricot in the vicinity. If all the nearby apricots have decent fruit, then the odds are good that your seeds would produce trees that have decent fruit, although they will display traits of the Sungold, its parents, and of the tree that pollinated it and its parents. So it is hard to tell what you will really get. Worth a shot if you want to experiment, however. Growing the tree from seed will take quite a few years to get to production compared to planting a grafted bare root variety, though. Several years ago I grew a bunch of apricot seedlings with little effort. I had some apricots I picked up the first of September, the seeds just laid on the counter until probably November. Then I planted them in a large old flower pot in some potting soil, about an inch or so deep, and threw a couple inches of leaves on top. Then placed the pot on the north side of the shop just under the eaves so any snow or rain we happened to get during the winter would run off the roof and onto the pot to keep the soil moist. Then I forgot them until spring. In May, I remembered the pot and found about a dozen seedlings several inches high. These were transplanted to the garden for a few years to get some growth, then transplanted to a permanent location. I haven't had any fruit from they yet and they are about 6 years old but they don't get much care in their permanent location, get browsed and rubbed by deer, and very irregular watering. They have proved so far that they can withstand our winters, so that is a positive sign, and would probably make a hardy rootstock to graft better varieties to if I decide they won't produce good fruit. God's honest truth on a recent transplant.. who knows .... some trees/conifers are so stressed .... they react by producing a ton of seeds or cones/seeds ... others wont do it for years .... that said... do you figure your 2 to 3 inch caliper might already be a decade old.. minimum 5 years ... so why should it not produce, presuming it was properly cared for in ground.. prior to potting.. or for its whole life in a pot ... what i am trying to say.. is you really dont know where it is.. in its voyage to sexual maturity ... so when would even start counting the 7 years you refer to ... do we count .... from birth.. from first field planting.. from transplanting to the pot.. or from your root surgery and planting ... so.. full circle.. who knows ... it sounds like it was in a pretty small pot for the size of tree your describe.. i would guess it is going to take 3 to 5 years to get 'established' [ growth of its root mass to match the tree above] ... and if i had to bet money ... it will be that long before you get a full crop of seeds ... at a minimum .. flowers this spring can be aborted ... and you may get some sporadic seeds ... etc .... over-reacting.. YEP!!!! .... just be happy its alive ... lol ... think of it this way.. no matter its size.. you have a new born ... sexual maturity is in the teens .. you have a long way to go.. to grow the root mass... for it to recover the capacity to become fully .. sexually active ... to mix.. just a few metaphors.. lol ... be glad it leafed out.. and worry about flowers in a few years ... good luck.. even if it is a maple ken

Glad I read around a bit before posting....this answers my question! I have LOTS of Elephant garlic around my property that I just began harvesting today. Was wondering what caused them to grow back after I pulled up the plant. Bubils, you say? That's what those little mini-clove looking, dangly things are? Tried looking that word up in a dictionary and gardening book but didn't find it. You think I can pull them off the harvested cloves and plant them somewhere else? Could I give these to friends to grow garlic? What a wonderful coincidence this is! Just as I'm thinking about this, I visit here, and here you are discussing it.
