Opinions on 'drainage problem section' in backyard
Comments (2)I looked at your photo and I am assuming that the area of concern is behind the dry streambed, since I cannot see the trunk of the willow. There are a couple issues to consider. If you add soil, you run the risk of smothering the roots of the tree. Even a few inches of soil spread on top of the root system of a tree can smother them, preventing air exchange from taking place in the original root zone. The fibrous roots that are currently near, or just below, the surface would be buried and you risk a slow decline or death to the tree. The same concern would be with adding a retaining wall and building up the bed. The other concern with the retaining wall is that to build it properly requires digging a footer for a compacted stone base. Digging that trench, roughly 4-6" deep, will cut off another large part of the root system as it extends from the tree. Without the footer, the wall will most likely shift and settle unevenly in the years ahead. The other concern with raising the area is that there is a wooden fence. If you raise the dirt level along the fence, ,it will cause premature rotting of the fence pickets. If you have a better pic of the area, I might be able to give you some other ideas of what to do. Try taking a pic while standing in the yard, so I can see under the tree....See MoreEastern Redbud - Cause: Sections of tree suddenly appear dead?
Comments (11)Hi Everyone, First thank you for your comments and helpfulness. I have numerous pictures but at the present moment, I am uncertain as to how to post them...smiles. I have clipped a few edges to see if there were any green left to them and from the tips I would say no. As mentioned, right now, these two large branches do not have any flowers on them and look dead in appearance. If fact, I just spoke to a gentleman who sold me the tree a few years back and he was saying that the winters here in Illinois have been very bad on the Redbuds in fact to the point of him no longer carrying them due to all the one year guarantees he had lost. Smiles. This tree only has about 6 main branches and if I cut out the two, I have a feeling, it may then be best to cut the whole tree out given that it is not that big and all the diseases this tree is suseptible to. Right now, I am thinking of possibly a Kousa Dogwood given that I do not want something too large given that it will be situated next to a sidewalk. I would like something with decorative flowering and the possibly a maroon leaf during the year. Again, I am in Illinois. Thanks, MEtten...See MoreIs the Smaller Homes section more budget conscious?
Comments (29)My house has topped out at a little over 2000sf, but I'm still a smaller homes kind of person (and a notorious cheapskate). I've saved every scrap of lumber and tile from every home improvement project, and reused as much as possible. I have more time than money to invest, though. My youngest is taking after me. ♥ She purchased a couple of acres with a shell of a building, and has been raiding my remaining stockpile (and tool room) for her very small, almost-off-the-grid, too-primitive-for-me, remodel. But our kitchens both have black marble tile!...See MoreBack fence section - should I leave it off?
Comments (6)A single gate in the back fence is best for people in a garden. A double gate will look more industrial ag. Take all three play items and group them together as single functioning play area on the left or right side of the yard (whichever neighbor's side jabbering children will annoy the most - ha, just kidding). Grouping them to one side will look much better than the current line of it across the back and open more of the view of the borrowed landscape. Let your kids help decide on the exact placement. They will intuitively know how they want to move from one item to the next....See Morewestes Zone 9b California SF Bay
