Will mixing sand with clay soil be bad for grass later?
Comments (12)I reside in the North Carolina Triassic Basin having veins of red, white, blue, gray and nearly black clay. The Triassic Basin contains mudstones and claystones that are the mainstay of the North Carolina brick industry. The North Carolina State University Horticulture Notes clearly state that for our area there are three soil amendments that should always be avoided; peat moss (water retention), gypsum (good for alkaline clay soils, not acid clay soil) and sand (any mixture less than 70% sand in 30% clay actually packs more densely that straight clay, you have brick). For the lawn I would consistently use compost and organics. For planting holes I have tried and failed with amending deep holes with anything in my clay. I end up with a deep clay pot in the ground with nowhere for the water to go. The plant roots then rot from sitting in water. I have now had success digging wide shallow saucer shape holes and then mounding that up using 50% bark fines along with the usual topsoil/compost, etc....See MoreMade a C&S mix with 50% perlite.Does it look better now
Comments (19)The middle pot is not too small but repotting is not long down the road. About getting soil off of roots. I use a gentle hose to wash the soil off. I also have used a tinny brush thing I have. After washing the soil off, I let them dry for a couple of days. If any roots are bruised , they would have callused over. This step really minimizes the rot that can come from damaged roots. I always get rid of soil that plants come in. It is good plant hygiene. I do not want other peoples bugs, and you don't want mine. sometimes I use this time to spray with a systemic pesticide. and fungicide before drying. Just now, I had a huge Aloe cameroni that had gotten blighted by my son leaving the door to my winter warm space open during a cold front and this plant half of it was dying from rot. I decanted it and the roots were a large mass of mostly rotted shizz. Helf the plant had dissociated itself from the dying half and was putting on a growth spurt. I did severe washing and cutting of the roots looking for ALL the dead and dying, but out of a large hydra headed plant O still have a nice large plant and five rosettes to re root. They are dosed with fungicide and bayer 3 in one. and drying eating to be potted. The rosettes are being misted and I am waiting to see root nubs before I plant them. One can be pretty rough with aloes as long as you let the damage callus by letting things dry up. They will grow more roots....See Morewhat does a bad combination look like?
Comments (25)One rule for color composition is to use colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, called complimentary colors. Another common color composition is to use color "triads" based on 3 equidistant colors on the color wheel. One problem I have when trying to do this with flower arrangements is that there are always other colors around that make life more complicated, the blue sky, brown bark, green leaves... So while such rules can give you an abstract concept to shoot for, it's very difficult to be a purist. A "real" artist seems to be able to work with a whole palate of colors, carefully selected, and produce a pleasing composition. I suspect that a spectacular garden might involve choosing the palate in such a manner. But the complications boggle the mind. Different things have different colors at different seasons, in and out of bloom, for example, and low growing things aren't usually seen in the same "composition" with the tops of trees. The ability to integrate all of this into a total whole seems unimaginably complex to plan. Which is why I hope for dumb luck, happy accidents, and such....See MoreRetractable Screens for Marvin Sliding Door
Comments (9)So far we love our Marvin slider. As spring progresses we've found we can't open it as much - too many bugs! It needed some adjustment at the beginning. A rep came out and adjusted it no problem. Marvin has been fabulous! We have a set of two very tall French doors in another room. After they were installed last fall they were fine. Then we got a lot of rain. Slowly the bottom of one swelled and started hitting the bottom of the other and eventually we couldn't open the door. The Marvin person came, saw the problem, and ordered us a whole new set of doors about 1/8" narrower (these are very expensive doors). When he came back to install them (a few months later due mostly to us) the original doors were fine. He said he thought that might happen (companies use very green wood to make doors so they may take some time to get to their proper size). He left the new doors with us - so we have a spare in case something happens to the others. So far the same person has come back to do all the servicing. He's from Marvin itself. (The contractor also has the store that sold us the windows as a back-up but so far we haven't needed them). He's great - fixed a couple of other small problems. I really feel like they stand behind their products. We're having a lot of problems with our Miele appliances - their service is supposedly great but there's no comparison. Miele is a total pain, Marvin is a total pleasure....See Moredan1888
