Has anyone ver grown a Mango tree up north?
Comments (44)Mike, Unfortunately I have to start over with my ice cream banana because i left it out in the cold. I'm currently moving and might try with a metal halide indoors. While we're on the subject of tropicals though I have a miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) in Al's 5-1-1 by a window with a cfl which is currently flushing yet again. It initally dropped all its leaves back in march but its come all the way back. Hopefully I'll get some fruit from it soon. I also have a second one of these trees- I put it in the 5-1-1 but with Sphagnum instead of peat. It dropped all its leaves and has done nothing at all for the past 3 months. The moss is very slow to dry but I hear these love water so I don't know whats wrong with this one. Maybe it needs humidity indoors to get it kick started. If anyone would know, i'd love to hear. I'm anxious to try growing some citrus this summer. -Greg...See MoreHas anyone grown M Itinerans yunnan in the UK?
Comments (2)I've got plants of itinerans yunnan planted in my garden grown from seed sold by rarepalmseeds from (I think) the first batch ever offered. This was, maybe, 4 or 5 years ago. Of the two I wrapped for overwintering, only one made it. I would grow your plants on in a pot until they're 4/5 feet before trying them in the ground. I think you'd have a better chance than most with success growing them in Devon. They're not basjoo or sikkimensis hardy though. I've not noticed them suffering in the sun. Hope that helps....See MoreHas anyone grown shiso? it is wonderful!
Comments (22)I have harvested a large amount of shiso leaves by now. The last thing I made was some shiso tea. I placed the washed leaves of both purple and green leaves in a large pot of water that I had heated to a boil, and added 1/2 teaspoon of citric acid. Steeped the leaves until the water was cooled, strained and refrigerated the amazingly colored liquid in a pitcher. It makes a nice refreshing drink. Some folks suggest adding sugar, I had mine plain. I also used it in a stir fry, with carrots, green beans, scallions, garlic and seitan. I shredded the shiso and added it towards the final steps of the stir fry, it greatly reduced in volume (like spinach) and gave the dish a nice interesting flavor. It is not invasive like mint, and I have transplanted my seedlings when they were growing in less than desirable spots. I now have scattered it all around the garden, but I also have basil scattered around and I see no harm in basil and shiso volunteers next spring.......See MoreHas Anyone Grown Limelights in Full Sun in Southern California?
