Yep, they're often floppy when tall. The stems will be nice and firm and it won't seem to make sense. That is a very nice looking plant, personally I'd let in grow for a few more feet before giving it the chop but it won't harm it to cut it whenever you're ready to do it. I find bamboo poles to be a more attractive option to tie plants to rather than dowels or boards. Two thicker poles (1/2" -3/4") are more than stiff enough to hold it up. HD's near me sell bamboo up to 1/2" and some of the real garden centers sell them bigger and you can also get short hook & loop (Velcro) type straps to bind it. I wish I had pictures of the ones I saw in Costa Rica. I think we often think of these as partial sun or shade plant but they were growing in full sun and full sun there makes my mid-summer full sun seem like a mid-winter full sun. 115 degrees in April, You could almost feel the sunlight pushing you into the ground it was so intense. Anyways, mine got to about 10-1/2 feet so I chopped the top couple of feet off late last winter and rooted it. Waited a couple of months for new growth to get nice and big on top and chopped it off again and now it's ready to lose another couple of feet. But, unlike yours, my Def only had leaves on the top 16 - 18 inches, the rest was bare stem. When you cut yours it will probably loose the bottom few leaves. I should be able to get three more similar cut offs and it also has new growth from the base. I have the cuttings growing in a vase of water with hydro nutrients and when I finish I plan to transfer them to hydroton and grow them in semi-hydro all together.

Welcome to Gardenweb! On elephant ears, I think most people wait until frost kills the tops and then wait for a nice day to dig them up. Don't worry about it hurting your bulbs. They can stand some pretty cold temperatures and even this far north (Springfield area), they will sometimes return if you leave them in the ground all winter. But - when mine have made it through the winter in the ground, they didn't grow as well the next summer. I think they do better when I dig them up and store them. I have stored mine both in an unheated garage and also in my basement closet which is cool but not cold and they did fine both places. If you search this forum for elephant ears, you will find more info. Some people dig a hole to store theirs but our ground is rocky and I've never tried that. It's too much work to dig.

Nice sandy, is Muncie in southern Indiana? Are you sure you're not zone 6? I always hear about mulching even in zone 6 Pa here, or they will not come back. I guess you know your zone. I think I'll add some sand to my raised bed soil, just a bit. I'll be trying Cannas in the same bed, I just bought a bag with 3 roots in it, and the foliage is starting to come up. You know those bags of dried up plant roots/corms you can get at Wal-mart or anywhere in early spring, well, I just grabbed up a bag today, and as said the plants are starting to grow in the dark bag of dried (likely) peat, so I know their good. I will be putting soil in my raised bed tomorrow if the weather permits, you know, no rain. The temps here are warm as hell, 86 today, what happened to spring, it feels like summer. I have the bed, but need to put it together, then put the soil in it. I will put more sandy soil in 1 half of it, (it's got a divider in the middle) for my Cannas and a Eucomis or Pineapple lilly. They like drier soil. I have 3 Yuccas in a biggish pot. They are Yucca Gloriosa Varagieta, yucca Rostrata and yucca Recurvifolia. I'll just put the pot on the soil in the bed, they will need more sun than the site will have in the future. With the plants Musa included wanting dry soil, I should make a cover for the bed for winter. And put it on only after everything has dried out a bit in fall, just to keep rain out of the bed. Not to enclose it all on the sides too, that would encourage rot, just to keep rain out. Later.

My Banana's (Musa Basjoo) were fine outside this year and came back beautifully. I would say try to keep them above freezing. I did have 2 pups I put in my greenhouse, and they grew slowly all winter. The one outside died back and came back in the spring. My Dwarf Cavendish, I overwintered in the house, will put on my deck over the summer in a pot. I lost a Ice Cream Banana to cold, and none of my EE's made it. So I'm having to change up the EE plan this year. But as long as you don't drop below freezing, you should be fine. We had an unusually cold winter here this year, quite a few nights in the teens and even single digits.
