AuntJemima, That's really really sad to see what you're dealing with with those poor bulbs, especially since they had such nice roots to being with. Five or six years ago I made my first cross and knowing nothing about amaryllis I grew the seedling to about the size of a grape (I was so proud of myself!!) and planted them in styrofoam coffee cups with just one drainage hole. Then I watered the daylights out of them for the summer. Result: All came down with red blotch. I threw most of them away but I saved about 3 of them and dunked them in a 3% bleach solution. This burned the leaves and roots and the outside of the bulb. I then took them and put them in plastic coffee cups this time and just forgot about them..Didn't water them and several months later they started sending up leaves, To make this long story a bit shorter, I was able to bring one to flower. So if you're still experimenting and you've got a couple of whole bulbs it wouldn't hurt to give it a try, all they can do die which they might anyway... I wish you luck, it's not pleasant to play nursemaid to so many sick bulbs... Donna

I'm curious, Elbereth, if you don't mind... what did the store say about the red blotch? I'm sure they refunded, Costco is rather good about that... I'm just rather curious... because if one bulb in their pallet load had red blotch, it's fairly safe to assume that more were affected... I wonder where the bulbs originated... That's such a shame... I'm so sorry to hear about it... I know how disappointed I'd be, and I hope this episode doesn't turn you off to growing Amaryllis...

Hello Nicole No it is not red blotch. Just remains of some damage. The prevention can treat some fungicide. I process fundazol (benlate), take a little of the drug is mixed with a very small amount of water and then mixed well and put on a bulb or leaves where there is a red spot.

OK. Well, now you should just wait. Do not water the bulb after the initial watering in fact I may not have watered it at all and just let it sit on top of the soil for some (a few weeks) time so you could easily lift it up to check on whether or not you had dried it properly and look for the possibility of rot which can certainly happen at this point. I do that often with bulbs that I have either trimmed the basal plate or had cut some tissue due to a rot issue and want to be sure that it had dried properly. Later, you can just add an inch or two of soil on top and once again your bulb will be buried. I see that you bud tip has turned reddish green, probably just the variety (Charisma buds have a red cast to them if I'm not mistaken) and nothing to worry about. Make sure the soil is not constantly wet. At this point dry is much better than wet. Good luck and check back when the bud starts to elongate which is most likely all that the bulb will do initially... bloom first and then think about roots and leaves. Donna☺☺
