Cottage garden evolution, looking back, looking ahead
Comments (5)Don't be so hard on yourself. We all learn in different ways, but at least you learn. None of us are perfect, I'll bet it's turning out to be quite lovely. You're creating some future memories for your family, and you don't have idle hands, so keep plugging away. Ask any gardener, the beauty of it lies within the fact that you CAN move things around. It's not permanent persay, so you move something someplace else, it happens alot. I'd love to see pictures of your gardens, I'll bet they're very nice. Good luck to you....See MoreLooking ahead
Comments (7)I had found a few websites that listed May 23rd for Columbus and May 29th for Akron and I'm kind of half way between them. In trying to find them again to answer you, I just found one site that recommended subtracting 2 weeks from the first frost date and adding 2 to the last frost date, so maybe I'll try that this fall and next spring. I also found another one that says average last frost for us is Apr 26. I guess the May date is more of an absolute instead of an average. I wonder if I should go ahead and plant my tomatoes outside instead of transferring them to bigger pots.... http://www.victoryseeds.com/frost/oh.html http://usagardener.com/breaking_ground/frost_dates_usa.php http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather/2007/02/14/average-frost-dates/...See MoreLooking ahead to spring -- big catalogs
Comments (5)Well, I don't consider Room & Board in the category of the catalogs that have new collections for the seasons -- it doesn't change up everything for the newest color. But their 2012 catalog is out. You might want to check out its web site. Crate & Barrel just had a mailing with some nice spring colors. But I can't remember if there were a lot of new furniture offerings -- I do recall some new colors in items it has had before....See MoreElephant ears: looking ahead
Comments (0)In the past month I've planted several varieties of elephant ears in containers. The labels indicate that at least some of them are perennials, perhaps hardy to zone 8. What should I do with them come fall? Bring them inside? If so, what conditions do they need? I overwinter some tender plants in my basement, which has windows but not bright light; we keep a light on a timer during the day, although I'm not sure how much it helps. Should I add light? Should I remove the bulbs and store them when the foliage dies? Leave them outdoors in their containers? Does it make a difference if the containers are plastic or pottery? If I can keep them alive, I'd like to do that rather than replacing them....See Moresaturn333
